Miguel Ruiz Lobo, 42, has been accused of killing 11-year-old Martha Guzman after the girl talked her mother into breaking up with him.
On June 22, Guzman was found dead inside the home she shared with her mother and three-year-old brother. Her neck and wrists had been slashed. Her death was originally believed to be a suicide since Guzman had a history of cutting, but autopsy results revealed her death was a homicide.
Focus quickly turned to Ruiz, the ex-boyfriend of Guzman’s mother. Ruiz used to live with the family, but Guzman’s mother had broken up with him five months ago at the urging of her daughter.
During their investigation, police noted Ruiz had fresh scratches on his arms and face, so they took a swab of his DNA and sent it off to be tested against fingernail scrapings collected from Guzman. He told police he had not seen the girl in days, but police had proof that was not true.
They had surveillance footage from a neighbor’s security camera that showed Ruiz entering Guzman’s apartment at approximately 10:28 A.M. on the day of the murder, and leaving the apartment approximately 30 minutes later. No one else is seen entering the apartment until Guzman’s mother came home and found her daughter at approximately 2:28 P.M.
Police say they knew Ruiz was lying to them about his involvement in the girl’s death from the beginning, but they had to be patient and wait for a case to be built against him.
That wait ended when the DNA they collected from Ruiz matched the samples taken from Guzman’s fingernails. Before 220 pound and 6-feet, 4-inches tall Ruiz overpowered Guzman, the little girl had fought for her life.
“We believe that he subdued her quickly, and during that time is when she was able to get in a few scratches on his face and on his arms. He’s such a huge monster of a man that could control her easily,” said City of Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa. “He restrained her and after he killed her, he slashed her wrists. The wrists were slashed so far deep, that it almost came off her arm.”
Ruiz was arrested on Monday on first degree murder and occupied burglary charges. He has since invoked his right to council and is no longer talking to authorities.
Investigators feel they have a clear motive; Ruiz blamed the 11-year-old for ending his three year relationship with the girl’s mother, so he slit her throat as revenge.
“It all stems from the little girl and her mother did not get along with Mr. Ruiz, who was the boyfriend of the mother, and eventually the little girl convinced mom to break up with Mr. Ruiz,” said Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa. “Mr. Ruiz was not happy about it. He returned to the house when the girl was alone. He used a key that he knew the whereabouts of the key, and we believe he entered and killed the young lady.”
Guzman’s mother said she never thought her daughter committed suicide and was just waiting for police to prove it. “From the moment I found her, I never thought she committed suicide because I know my daughter,” she said.
