'Rape-provoking' miniskirts banned by Swazi police

Women in Swaziland risk arrest if they wear miniskirts or tops which expose part of their stomach as they will be violating moral standards, a police spokesperson has said."The act of a rapist is made easy, because it would be easy to remove the half-cloth worn by the women," Wendy Hleta was quoted as saying.

Offenders face a six-month jail term under the ban, which invokes a colonial criminal act dating back to 1889.

The ban also applies to low-rise jeans.

"They will be arrested," she said.

Hleta said women wearing revealing clothing were responsible for assaults or rapes committed against them.

"I have read from the social networks that men and even other women have a tendency of 'undressing people with their eyes'. That becomes easier when the clothes are hugging or are more revealing," Hleta said.

Traditional costumes

However, the ban does not apply to traditional costumes worn by young women during ceremonies like the annual Reed Dance, where the ruling King Mswati III chooses a wife.

The monarch already has 13 wives.

During the ceremony, beaded traditional skirts worn by young bare-breasted virgins cover only the front, leave the back exposed. Underwear is not allowed.

The law was enforced after a march by women and young girls last month calling for protection against a spate of rapes in the impoverished kingdom, almost entirely surrounded by South Africa.

According to a media report, the march was blocked by police.

Al-Qaeda offers $160,000 reward to kill US ambassador in Sanaa

US Ambassador to Yemen Gerald M. Feierstein, left, shakes hands with a Yemeni army officer during a visit to Abyan, Yemen. Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen has offered to pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills Feierstein or an American soldier in the country, according to an audio produced by the group's media arm, the al-Malahem Foundation, and posted on militant websites Saturday, December 29, 2012. Al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen has offered to pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills the US ambassador in Sanaa or an American soldier in the country.

An audio produced by the group’s media arm, the al-Malahem Foundation, and posted on militant websites Saturday said it offered three kilograms of gold worth $160,000 for killing the ambassador, Gerald Feierstein.

The group said it will pay 5 million Yemeni riyals ($23,000) to anyone who kills an American soldier inside Yemen.

It said the offer is valid for six months.

The bounties were set to “inspire and encourage our Muslim nation for jihad,” the statement said.

The US Embassy in Sanaa did not respond to an Associated Press phone call asking for comment.

Washington considers al-Qaeda in Yemen to be the group’s most dangerous branch.

The group overran entire towns and villages last year by taking advantage of a security lapse during nationwide protests that eventually ousted the country’s longtime ruler. Backed by the US military experts based at a southern air base, Yemen’s army was able to regain control of the southern region, but al-Qaeda militants continue to launch deadly attacks on security forces that have killed hundreds.

In the capital, Sanaa, security officials said two gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed two intelligence officers early Sunday as they were leaving a downtown security facility. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations, said all intelligence and security officers have been instructed to take precautionary measures outside working hours.

The government blames al-Qaeda for the killing of several senior military and intelligence officials this year mainly by gunmen on motorbikes.

The officials said security authorities in Sanaa have launched a campaign against motorcyclists suspected of involvement in these attacks or other crimes, arresting about 200 for questioning for violations, including driving motorcycles without license plates.

India holds candlelit vigils for Delhi gang-rape victim

Candlelit vigils have been held across India to mourn a woman who has died after being gang-raped in Delhi.

Thousands of people gathered in the Indian capital to express their grief and demand justice for the 23-year-old victim, who died earlier on Saturday.

Six men arrested in connection with the 16 December attack have now been charged with murder.

The victim's body is being flown back home from Singapore, where she had been taken for specialist treatment.

The rape triggered violent public protests over attitudes towards women in India.

Large areas of Delhi were sealed off and hundreds of armed police and riot troops deployed as news of the victim's death spread.

Protest in Delhi, India (29 Dec 2012)

During Saturday, large crowds people gathered at sites where public gatherings were allowed.

These included the city's Jantar Mantar observatory, where people lit candles in the woman's memory.

"We are aware that this is not the first case, nor will it be the last case of gang-rape in India, but it is clear that we will not tolerate sex crimes any more," Rana, a lawyer, told the AFP news agency.

The victim's coffin, draped in a white flag, was taken to Singapore's Changi airport to be flown home, accompanied by her parents who were at her bedside when she died.

Over the past two weeks, the unnamed woman has became a symbol of the wider issue of how women are treated in India, says the BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in Delhi. The Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore said the woman "passed away peacefully" early on Saturday.

Hospital chief executive Kelvin Loh said she had suffered severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain.

India's Home Affairs minister, Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh, said he was "heartbroken" by her death.

"I can only assure the family that the government will take whatever steps are needed to ensure that her killers get the harshest punishment in the quickest of time," he said.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was "very saddened" by the woman's death, and that the angry public reaction was "perfectly understandable".

He called on politicians and the public to set aside "narrow sectional interest" and work together to make India "a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in".The woman - a medical student whose identity has not been released - and her friend had been to see a film when they boarded the bus in the Munirka area of Delhi, intending to travel to Dwarka in the south-west of the city.

Police said she was raped for nearly an hour, and both she and her companion were beaten with iron bars, then thrown out of the moving bus into the street.

The assault sparked angry protests about the general conditions for women in India, and about what is seen as an inadequate police response to rape allegations.

Officials have since announced a series of measures intended to make Delhi safer for women.

These include more police night patrols, checks on bus drivers and their assistants, and the banning of buses with tinted windows or curtains.

The government has also said that it will post the photos, names and addresses of convicted rapists on official websites to shame them.

It has set up two committees - one looking into speeding up trials of cases involving sexual assaults on women, and the other to examine the lapses that might have led to the incident in Delhi.

But the protesters say the government's pledge to seek life sentences for the attackers is not enough - many are calling for the death penalty.

India gang-rape victim dies in hospital

A female student gang-raped on a bus in India's capital Delhi has died at a Singapore hospital, doctors say.

The 23-year-old had arrived in Singapore on Thursday after undergoing three operations in a Delhi hospital. The woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were traveling on a bus in New Delhi after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman's body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

Indian police have arrested six people in connection with the attack, which left the victim with severe internal injuries, a lung infection and brain damage. She also suffered from a heart attack while in the hospital in India.

Indian High Commissioner, or ambassador, T.C.A. Raghavan told reporters that the scale of the injuries the woman suffered was "very grave" and in the end "proved too much."

He said arrangements were being made to take her body back to India.

The frightening nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have come out in the thousands for almost daily demonstrations. Indian television channels said security had been tightened in New Delhi on Saturday in anticipation of more protests following the woman's death.

The protesters are demanding stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment. Women face daily harassment across India, ranging from catcalls on the streets, groping and touching in public transport to rape.
On Friday, Abhijit Mukherjee, a national lawmaker and the son of India's president, apologized for calling the protesters "highly dented and painted" women who go from discos to demonstrations.

"I tender my unconditional apology to all the people whose sentiments got hurt," he told NDTV news.

Several Indian celebrities reacted with sadness Saturday over the woman's death. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, "Her body has passed away, but her soul shall forever stir our hearts."

Separately, authorities in Punjab state took action Thursday when an 18-year-old woman killed herself by drinking poison a month after she told police she was gang-raped.

State authorities suspended one police officer and fired two others on accusations they delayed investigating and taking action in the case. The three accused in the rape were only arrested Thursday night, a month after the crime was reported.

"This is a very sensitive crime, I have taken it very seriously," said Paramjit Singh Gill, a top police officer in the city of Patiala.

The Press Trust of India reported that the woman was raped Nov. 13 and reported the attack to police Nov. 27. But police harassed the girl, asked her embarrassing questions and took no action against the accused, PTI reported, citing police sources.

Authorities in the eastern state of Chhattisgarh also suspended a police officer on accusations he refused to register a rape complaint from a woman who said she had been attacked by a driver.

Unbelievable!!. Englishman recovers from stroke, can speak only Welsh

Morgan

An Englishman recently recovered from a stroke and awoke to find himself only able to speak in a language he says he never formally learned.

Alun Morgan, 81, grew up speaking English, but lived in Wales temporarily when he was evacuated there during World War II. He lived there for only a few months, according to the Independent, though the BBC reported he was a resident for four years.

Either way, he "learned a bit of Welsh" while living there, but says he had not spoken the language for 70 years, though his wife speaks it fluently.

Following his stroke,Morgan was in a coma for three weeks, according to the Telegraph. When he finally regained consciousness, he was speaking Welsh, though he did not realize at the time he wasn't talking in his native tongue.

"I just spoke away. It wasn't until my wife told me what was happening I expressed some surprise," he told the BBC on Thursday.

The Bath resident told the station he "got up two or three days later and spoke English again," though he still has "a few problems" relating to speech. According to the Mail Online, Morgan said that "English words came back gradually, but it wasn't easy." He has reportedly been taking speech lessons to regain completely control over the language.

He has also stated that he has now "almost forgotten" Welsh again. Joe Korner of the Stroke Association told the Independent that aphasia -- a disorder that impairs an individual's ability to communicate and process language -- is one of several language issues that can occur after a stroke.

However, he noted, while some stroke survivors lose language skills or struggle to recall words, a small number may unlock language abilities they did not realize they had.

"We believe the damaged brain finds new pathways, which unlock memories or knowledge that is latent but not expressed,” Korner said.

1,000 doomsday cult members arrested in China

Police in China have carried out further arrests of members of a doomsday cult for spreading rumours about the imminent end of the world, state media say.

Almost 1,000 members of Christian group Almighty God have now been detained.

State media terms Almighty God an "evil cult" - the same description it applies to the banned Falun Gong group.

The sect predicts Friday will usher in three days of darkness and has urged its members to overthrow communism.

Its adherents believe 21 December is the last day in the Mayan long count calendar and thus signifies the end of the world.

The belief has gained considerable popularity in China where the film 2012 was a box office hit.

It is not just followers of Almighty God who think the world will end on Friday. A farmer in Hebei province, Liu Qiyuan has built seven survival pods which can contain 14 people each.

The pods, made of fibreglass, float on water and can survive storms.

Mr Liu told Agence France Press: "If there really is some kind of apocalypse then you could say I've made a contribution to the survival of humanity,"

To calm anxieties, police in Beijing have posted an online notice telling people that "the so-called end of the world is a rumour".

Almighty God has told its believers that the apocalypse will usher in a new era presided over by a "female Jesus", according to the Chinese newspaper Global Times.

The group has been attacked by Chinese media which variously accuses female members of using "sex communication" to ensnare single men, of banning followers from carrying mobile phones and of using pseudonyms to conceal their real identities.

Little is known about the group, which state media said was formed about 20 years ago in the central Henan province.

Most of the arrests have been in the provinces of Qinghai and Guizhou, the Beijing Times reported.

Tunisian man dies after eating 28 raw eggs in 20 minutes

Fatnassi

On Wednesday, 20-year-old Tunisian man Dhaou Fatnassi died after completing a dare to eat 28 raw eggs, French-language radio station Shems FM reported.
According to News.com.au, Fatnassi's friends had promised to give him "an undisclosed sum of money" if he swallowed all 28 of the raw eggs whole. (One assumes that did not include the shells, but you can never be sure.) After doing so, Fatnassi reportedly started to feel pains in his stomach. He headed toward the Hopital les Aghlabides in Kairouan, Tunisia, to receive medical attention, but died in transit.

Over the years, many have surely wondered whether the famous egg-eating scene in "Cool Hand Luke" was replicable in real life, and whether it was really possible to eat 50 eggs and live to tell the tale, as Paul Newman's character did. (Though his eggs were hard-boiled, not raw.) But Fatnassi's grim end shows that some feats are meant to stay fictional. Let's hope his example wards off any future daredevils in the egg-eating arena.

Argentinian woman to marry man who murdered her twin sister

From right to left, Victor Cingolani, Johana Casas(middle),Edith Casas

An Argentinian woman will reportedly marry the man convicted of murdering her twin sister in a ceremony Friday to be held at the prison where he is serving out his sentence for the crime.

Edith Casas, 22, steadfastly believes in her husband-to-be’s innocence, although her mother has vowed to do everything she can to block her impending jailhouse nuptials.

"We know this will be hard because she is an adult, but we will go to court to try to have her examined by a psychiatrist,” Marcelina Orellana reportedly said of her daughter, who is set to marry Victor Cingolani. “As far as we are concerned, she does not know what she is doing.”

Casas, for her part, described her husband-to-be as, “a guy who would not hurt a fly. He did not kill her…(My mother) cannot say I need a psychiatrist because I am fully aware of what I am doing.”

Cingolani is now serving a 13-year sentence in a prison in Santa Cruz province for killing Johana Casas, a fashion model, in August 2010.

"I loved Johana, but I love Edith," Cingolani said, according to Agence France-Presse. "I have a beautiful bride and I am going to marry her."

Another man, Marcos Diaz, who had also gone out with Johana, is also doing time over the killing.

In 2010, the body of Johana Casas turned up in a field with two bullets holes in it; Cingolani was subsequently convicted of the crime, though Edith maintains her fiancé's innocence.

She tells The BBC that Cingolani "would not hurt a fly."

The controversial nuptials were scheduled to take place on Saturday, but a civil judge granted the request of Edith's mother for her daughter to undergo a psychiatric evaluation because she believes Edith to be mentally "ill."

Cingolani's attorney, Lucas Chacon, says Marcos Diaz - who was dating Johana at the time of her death - is actually responsible for the murder. Diaz goes on trial next year.

Irannian govt re-arrests Pastor Nadarkhani on Christmas day

Nadarkhani

The Iranian Christian pastor who had been imprisoned in Iran for converting from Islam to Christianity was taken into custody again on Christmas Day, according to several Iranian media sources and individuals close to the pastor and his family.

Youcef Nadarkhani, 35, had been summoned to return back to Lakan Prison in Rasht, the facility where he served time and was then released, based on the charge that he must complete the remainder of his sentence, according to several reports and confirmed by those close to Nadarkhani in Iran.

In September, the pastor was acquitted of apostasy, but the court maintained his three-year sentence for evangelizing Muslims. As he had already served close to three years, the pastor was freed after posting bail.

The court had then stated that the remainder which equaled roughly 45 days, would be served in the form of probation.

Nadarkhani, married and father of two young children, came under the regime’s radar in 2006 when he applied for his church to be registered with the state. According to sources, he was arrested at that time and then soon released.

In 2009, Nadarkhani went to local officials to complain about Islamic indoctrination in his school district, arguing that his children should not be forced to learn about Islam.

He was subsequently arrested.

Since Nadarkhani's release in September, his attorney, Mohammed Ali Dadkhah has been imprisoned and remains in Iran's notoriously brutal Evin Prison where his health is rapidly deteriorating and is being denied proper dental care, according to his family. He has been incarcerated for advocating Nadarkhani's case and other human rights cases.

After his release, Nadarkhani wrote a public letter thanking all those who helped release him. In November, he traveled to London to speak at a national human rights conference thanking those who advocated on his behalf.

Doctor infects patients with hepatitis B during surgery

A doctor with hepatitis B who performed joint replacement surgeries unknowingly passed the virus on to at least two of his patients, according to a new report.

The report, issued by researchers at the University of Virginia Health System, said the surgeon first became aware that he had hepatitis B after he stuck himself with a needle, and underwent routine testing for blood-borne diseases. The surgeon had emigrated from a country that had a high prevalence of hepatitis B, and likely had had chronic hepatitis B for some time without showing symptoms, such as fever and nausea.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the surgeon's hospital began an investigation to identify and test all of the patients that the surgeon has treated during the previous nine months — the length of time he had worked at the hospital. Most of the surgeon's patients had undergone either hip or knee replacement surgery.

Out of 232 patients who were tested, two were found to be infected with a hepatitis B virus that was genetically identical to the one seen in the surgeon, meaning these two patients most likely caught the virus from the doctor. These patients were treated with drugs.

Another six patients had been infected with hepatitis B in the past. Because these patients did not currently have hepatitis B in their blood, researchers could not determine if the virus had been transmitted by the surgeon. But because these patients did not have any known risk factors for developing hepatitis B, it's possible they could have caught the virus from the surgeon, and cleared it from their bodies before being tested.

The report was published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases in October 2012, but the incident occurred in 2009.

Hepatitis B is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, including blood. The surgeon discussed in the report always wore two sets of gloves when he performed surgery, so it's not clear how he could have passed the virus to his patients.

"That is a bit of a mystery," said study research Dr. Costi Sifri, an infectious disease researcher and hospital epidemiologist at the University of Virginia Health System.

The researchers speculate that tiny tears in the gloves that occurred during surgery may have allowed the virus to pass from doctor to patient. In order for this have occurred, the surgeon would likely have had to have a cut on his hands as well, Sifri said.

Just last week, it was reported that a Los Angeles surgeon transmitted staph infections to his patients during surgery, possibly through tears in his gloves.

The findings underscore the need for surgeons to know whether or not they are infected with hepatitis B, and other blood-borne diseases such as HIV, Sifri said.

The surgeon in this case had previously received the hepatitis B vaccine, but did not respond to the vaccine because he already had an infection, Sifri said.

English doctors save man's life with shot of alcohol

When Ronald Aldom developed ventricular tachychardia, or an unusual heart rhythm, doctors decided to treat it a little unconventionally.

Doctors gave a shot of neat alcohol, or pure ethanol, via a catheter through the blood vessel in the groin that connects to the heart, BBC News reported.

For Aldom, 77, from Portishead in England, the ethanol triggered a “controlled heart attack,” and actually killed the part of his heart muscle that was problematic, according to BBC News.

Doctors decided to try this approach after several unsuccessful conventional treatments. “Ethanol ablation” as it is called, has only been done a handful of times in the United Kingdom.

The procedure saved Aldom’s life, making his heart beat regularly again.

“He wasn’t going to leave the hospital unless something was done,” said Dr. Tom Johnson, a cardiologist at the Bristol Heart Institute. “There was no other option.”

Johnson said Aldom is doing “much better,” and he’s out of the hospital.

Cameroonian bags 3yrs in prison for texting 'I'm in love with you' to another man

Roger Mbede

A Cameroon appeals court upheld a sentence against a man convicted of homosexuality for texting his male friend to say, "I'm very much in love with you."

Roger Mbede, a university student, was arrested in March last year after the man who received the message tipped off authorities, Human Rights Watch said.

A court sentenced Mbede to three years in prison at the time after he was beaten to coerce a confession, according to the group.

In July, after more than a year in detention, Mbede was released as his case went through the appeals process, the rights group said in a statement. The appeals court issued its ruling Monday.

Opinion: 'Why Nigeria's anti-gay bill sickens me'

"The appeals court decision ... is a blow to key human rights principles, including the right to privacy, the right to equality, and the prohibition of torture and ill-treatment," said Neela Ghoshal, a researcher at Human Rights Watch.

"The decision sends a warning to LGBT Cameroonians that they risk beatings, arrests, and imprisonment simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity."

Homosexuality is illegal in most African countries, where sodomy laws were introduced during colonialism.

Cameroon's sentences for homosexual acts vary between six months to five years, the rights group said, citing justice ministry records.

Authorities in the west African nation were not immediately available for comment.

A series of countries have criminalized homosexuality, but prosecutions are rare.

In Uganda, homosexual acts are punishable by 14 years to life, but lawmakers are trying to introduce a bill that toughens the law.

A handful of nations issue a death penalty for consensual same-sex relations, including Nigeria, Sudan, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia and Iran, according to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association.

Soldiers hunt for elephant that killed 4 people in Nepal

A killer elephant is being hunted by Nepalese soldiers today after it strayed into villages and killed four people in three months.

The rogue wild elephant walked into a thatched house in Gardi village adjoining Chitwan National Park, 50 miles south of Kathmandu, pulled a couple in their 60s from their bed and trampled them to death, said Shiva Ram Gelal, assistant district administrator from Bharatpur, the nearest city.

Nepal has about 300 elephants, including around 100 domesticated adults which take tourists on jungle rides in the country's many safari resorts.

Most are found on the sub-equatorial plains of the southern Terai, where contact with humans is a regular problem.

The same animal killed two other villagers within the last three months, park officials said.

'We have given orders to the army to shoot the elephant that has gone mad,' Gelal told Reuters.

'Soldiers are now searching for it.'

Nepal has about 300 elephants, including more than 100 domesticated ones which are used by hotels and national parks to take tourists on jungle rides to watch wild animals like one-horned Asian rhinoceroses and Bengal tigers.

Elephants are protected by law and anyone convicted of killing one faces up to 15 years in jail, but Gelal said the Local Administration Act - a Nepali law - allowed authorities to kill the animal if it was responsible for the loss of human life.

Recent elephant poaching incidents have led an WWF expert to warn that the species could face localised extinctions if it continues.

She said of the threats to animals such as elephants, rhinos and tigers: 'These are iconic species, they are being exploited and it's illegal and should be stopped.'

Species with high value to illegal traders had seen dramatic declines in recent years, including forest elephants in parts of the Congo basin, Asian elephant, Sumatran rhino and Javan rhino.

Health of Iraqi President, Jalal Talabani, critical after stroke

Talabani

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has suffered a stroke and is being treated in hospital, officials and media say.

A statement on his website said he was admitted on Monday night suffering from "fatigue and tiredness". His medical team is trying to stabilise him.

Mr Talabani has struggled with his health in recent years and has often been treated abroad, analysts say.

A veteran of the Kurdish guerrilla movement, Mr Talabani, 79, is Iraq's first president from the ethnic group.

The statement said Mr Talabani's efforts to forge a consensus in Iraq and the "consequent fatigue and tiredness" had led to a "health emergency".

A spokesman for Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, Ali al-Moussawi, told AP that doctors were deciding whether to continue treating him in Baghdad or to fly him abroad for medical care.

Mr Maliki is said to be at the hospital.

The president underwent heart surgery in the US in 2008, and was treated for dehydration and exhaustion in Jordan in 2007.

Mr Talabani has lived through decades of conflict with the central government and other Kurdish groups, including a period in exile, before the fall of Saddam Hussein.

He took over the mainly ceremonial presidency in the years after the 2003 invasion, and has often used the position to mediate between sectarian and ethnic groups.

Recently he brokered a deal between Baghdad and Kurdish groups to end a standoff on disputed areas on the border with the Kurdish self-rule area.

Mr Talabani and Mr Maliki were said to have met on Monday, and agreed to invite a Kurdish delegation to Baghdad for further talks.

Doctor commits suicide after parents objected to his relationship with fellow medic

A heartbroken doctor killed himself over a romance with another medic — because his parents objected to 'cultural differences' between the pair.

India-born Dr Madhu Honnaiah, 33, swallowed drugs from Singleton Hospital in Swansea where he worked after splitting with fiancée Dr Emma Wrighton.

An inquest heard his parents had objected to his engagement to British-born Dr Wrighton, 32, who had refused to have a Hindhu wedding.

Anaesthetist Dr Honnaiah was alone when he injected himself with two drugs used in surgery seven months after their split.

The inquest heard Dr Honnaiah had begun a relationship with fellow doctor Dr Wrighton in 2008 while working in Liverpool.

Dr Wrighton then got a job in Australia but the pair stayed in touch — and moved in together when she returned to Britain.

The two doctors got engaged in 2010, though Dr Honnaiah didn't inform his parents.

Investigating officer PC Huw Evans told the inquest that Dr Honnaiah was wary of telling his parents about the relationship because of their 'cultural beliefs.'

He said: 'During a visit to Britain from India, his parents learned of the relationship and said they weren't happy about it.

'It was said his parents wanted him to marry someone from his caste or from the Bangalore area of India where he grew up.'

'After the breakdown of his relationship, concerns about Dr Honnaiah's state of mind were raised by his colleagues,' PC Evans said.

Judge, His Family Beheaded in Ukraine

Volodymyr Trofimov

Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are investigating the grisly murder of a judge and three family members, who were beheaded in the city of Kharkiv.

Kharkiv Judge Volodymyr Trofimov, 58, his wife, son and the son's girlfriend were found dead in Trofimov's apartment on Saturday. All the bodies had been decapitated and the heads were missing, according to prosecutors and the police.

A prosecutor's spokesman said Monday that investigators believe Trofimov's killing could be connected to his job, because the murder took place on Dec. 15, which is Judge's Day in Ukraine.

Investigators also think the killing could have been the result of a robbery, because some belongings are missing from the apartment, or a contract murder.

No further details were available Monday.

Prison rape: Alabama female inmates narrate their ordeal

New measures are being implemented in the US to tackle rape and sexual assault in prison. But in Alabama, one women's prison has gained a notorious reputation for being unsafe.

Tutwiler prison stands next to US Highway 231, in the town of Wetumpka. Behind the barbed wire is a series of stone-coloured single-storey buildings.

This is Alabama's maximum security facility for women - a place where stories of rape and sexual assault are legion.

On a Sunday morning, Robert Chancey joins a queue of relatives waiting to visit the inmates. He has come to see Monica Washington, his cousin. Toddling along beside Robert, is Monica's little girl - growing tall and strong while her mother serves 20 years for robbery.

The guard told her when he took her in the room what he wanted to do to her”

Robert Chancey Cousin of Monica Washington

Away from the prison, Robert explains how Monica got pregnant. "She was raped in prison. She had the baby by one of the guards."

Robert learned about the attack during a prison visit when Monica was already two months pregnant.

"The guard told her when he took her in the room what he wanted to do to her and she said 'No'. He told her: 'Who do you think they're going to believe - you or me?' So she proceeded just to do what he wanted her to do."

Robert says his cousin was too frightened to report the rape, but prison gossip meant she could not hide the pregnancy - or how it happened - for long.

A Montgomery-based NGO, Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), investigated events at Tutwiler. Charlotte Morrison - an EJI lawyer representing Washington - says there are other cases involving the prison's staff.

"We know of numerous pregnancies, including three since 2009. We interviewed over 50 women at Tutwiler - what we found was really disturbing.

"Every single woman we interviewed had been either sexually assaulted, sexually harassed or had witnessed another female inmate being sexually harassed or sexually assaulted."

But this is not about one institution in one southern state. The United States is the most incarcerated nation on earth - more than two million inmates are behind bars in federal and state prisons, and local jails.

A recent survey by the Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics estimated 9.6% of former inmates at state prisons across the US reported one or more incidents of sexual victimisation during their most recent period of incarceration. About 5.4% of former state prisoners reported an incident involving another inmate, and 5.3% reported an incident involving staff. The US Congress has taken action, and the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) came into force last August. It sets out how prisons and jails should investigate and respond to complaints, how inmates should be able to report abuse, and recommends prisoners be guarded by same-sex staff where possible.

The Alabama Department of Corrections says it is working towards compliance with the PREA standards, but would not allow the BBC to visit any of its facilities.

At Florida's Turner Guilford Knight correctional facility, one of five jails run by the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, many of the PREA recommendations are being implemented. Staff are trained by Just Detention International (JDI) - an American NGO which has campaigned on prison rape for decades.

On arrival at a Miami-Dade jail, prisoners are advised on how they can keep safe and they have access to a 24-hour hotline. Calls go through to a local rape treatment centre and to Mujer, an NGO where the phone is answered by Ana Obregon.

"In October I had about 18 calls," she says. "The majority are from individuals or by friends of individuals who are identifying as gay - all of them have been men. There's a lot of unwanted touching going on. I have had two who have reported rape."

Campaigners believe that being able to report an assault to an outside organisation - like Mujer - is critical. But the prison context is complex, and the reporting system is open to abuse.

"Since the beginning of this year we have yet to experience an alleged assault we've been able to substantiate," says Marydell Guevara, assistant director of Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department.

"Prisoners may gamble with chips and candy bars. Let's say I was on the losing end, and I owe you five candy bars. Well, I'm going to get on the rape hotline and say: 'My cellmate Jo has sexually assaulted me.'

"They know what our protocol is - we come in, do a full investigation and in the interim, we separate them. So sometimes prisoners use it as a tactic to get someone moved out of their cell."

But this does not invalidate the system, she says. "I'd rather have 100 false reports than have one real one that we miss."

Man defends his sexual relations with donkey, says it's his constitutional right

Carlos Romero

A Florida man accused of having sex with a miniature donkey named Doodle is protected by the United States Constitution, his lawyers say.

In a motion obtained by Ocala.com and filed with Marion County court, Carlos Romero's attorneys argue that the state's anti-bestiality law deprives Romero of his "personal liberty and autonomy when it comes to private intimate activities."

Romero's lawyers said the statute violate's their client's due process rights and the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment in the U.S. Constitution.

The 32-year-old previously rejected a plea deal that would have required a year of probation, a $200 fine, a psychosexual evaluation and possible treatment, STD testing, no contact with children in a school setting, no ownership or possession of any mammals and revocation of his license to work in horse racing.

The accusations stem from an August incident in which a witness reportedly saw Romero with his pants down “up against the rear of the donkey," according to the Smoking Gun.

Romero reportedly stepped away from the donkey and pulled up his pants when he saw the witness.

But, when Marion County detectives questioned him about the incident, he allegedly admitted that, when the donkey is in heat, he will stand behind her, scratch her withers and masturbate. He says he "likes the way her fur feels on his privates," according to WSTP-TV.

GeekoSystem writes that Romero's lawyers deserve credit for fighting for their client.
