It serves as an eerie reminder of the appalling brutality of war, wreaked on the lives of the innocent.
It may have been 70 years since the inhabitants of Oradour-sur-Glane were massacred and all homes and businesses destroyed, but here in this ghost town near Limoges, France, it is still June 10 1944.
It was on this day that members of the dreaded S.S. stormed the town and lay its residents to waste.

Germany's president Joachim Gauck is expected today to make an historic pilgrimage to the town. It  will be the first made by a German head of state.

Veterans of the Das Reich division - its members had spent three years murdering civilians on the Russian front - were moving up to the Normandy battlefields to try to counter the Allied invasion forces when they detoured into the sleepy hamlet which had existed for 1,000 years.

Ironically, many of the soldiers who took part in the massacre were from the Alsace region - the disputed borderland that has changed hands many times between France and Germany down the centuries

The two presidents will be accompanied by two of the three living survivors -- Robert Hebras, 88 and Jean-Marcel Darthout.
Hebras, who was 19 at the time of the massacre, survived as he was buried under the corpses of others who were machine-gunned.
'I was consumed by hatred and vengeance for a long time,' he said, adding that Gauck's visit came at an opportune time.
'Any earlier would have been too soon.  But now we must reconcile with the Germans.'

Meet UK's most thrifty bride and groom who spent only £1 for their wedding

A pair of newlyweds say they have proved how easy it is to get married on a budget – by celebrating their nuptials for £1.
Georgina Porteous and Sid Innes organised their perfect day for family and friends, complete with rings, flowers, a cake and even a photographer to capture the occasion.
They also hosted a reception with a picnic, drinks, jazz music and dancing at a romantic setting in the Scottish Highlands, all on their unbelievably low budget.
But incredibly, apart from the £70 they had to pay by law for their marriage fees, their only expenditure was a pound on Georgina’s vintage wedding gown.
The newlyweds were toasting their good fortune today after spending only a tiny fraction of the average £20,000 cost of a wedding in the UK.
Georgina, 36, said: 'I don’t see the point in these massive weddings. It takes away from what marriage is truly about.

The only expense the couple could not avoid was the statutory £70 for the fees required to marry, but everything else was donated or sourced for free

'There is nothing to gain from spending a huge amount of money. The day is supposed to be about marrying the person you love and for us all that mattered was that we were becoming husband and wife. We didn’t want or need a big, fancy affair.'
Georgina, an artist, met singer-songwriter Sid, 39, at an art fair in Glasgow in 2009 and immediately said ‘yes’ when he proposed in Berlin last year.
The couple, who live near Inverness, started planning their big day but as they are both dedicated to recycling and self-sufficiency, they vowed to keep their nuptials as simple as possible.
The only expense they could not avoid was the statutory £70 for the fees required to marry, but everything else was donated or sourced for free.
Georgina said: 'From day one of the engagement we knew we wanted a small and cheap wedding, it was a natural thing for us because we are so invested in recycling and self-sustainability. We were really excited to plan it all.

'We have always been a bit alternative and arty so I enjoyed doing something a little different from everyone else’s weddings.'

HOW TO TIE THE KNOT FOR A POUND

      Wedding dress: £1, from freecycle.com
      Groom's suit: M&S, years old
Rings: Hand-crafted from antlers found in garden
Service: Vicar performed it for free in return for whip-round in aid of local church
Photographer: Donated services in return for bride working for him as film editor
Cake: Earl Grey-infused sponge cakes made by bride's aunt
Food: Guests contributed a dish each
Music: Bride's father played jazz saxophone
      Venue: Barn behind their cottage
Reception: A picnic on the grass outside
The wedding took place last night in a barn behind the couple’s idyllic cottage, which was decorated with solar lanterns, locally grown flowers and hay bales donated from farmers.
Georgina looked stunning in a 1960s hand-made floor-length ivory wedding gown with embroidered sleeves.
She found the dress the website freecycle, an online community where people can swap unwanted items, and it cost her a pound - their only expenditure on the day itself.
Sid opted for a stylish tweed suit he had bought years ago from Marks and Spencer.
Georgina’s mother Susanne, a church reader, conducted the ceremony in front of 70 guests.
The couple exchanged wedding rings hand-crafted by Georgina using antlers she found in their garden.
They were officially pronounced man and wife by local reverend Peter Donald, who had offered his services for free so the guests had a whip-round to make donations to the church.

Georgina's aunt had baked a three-tier chocolate orange wedding cake infused with Lady Grey tea, with the couple's initials intertwined on top for decoration

An official wedding photographer was on hand to capture the occasion after Georgina, also a freelance film editor, offered to work for him in return.
Each guest had been asked to bring food and drink, so they tucked into home-made quiches, sausage rolls, boiled potatoes, fresh bread and salad.
The couple proved a wedding day to remember does not need to cost a fortune, spending a tiny fraction of the the average UK wedding

Georgina’s aunt had baked a three-tier chocolate orange wedding cake infused with Lady Grey tea, with the couple’s initials intertwined on top for decoration.
After the wedding picnic, everyone partied the night away, as Georgina’s talented father, Harry, played some 1940s jazz on his saxophone.
Georgina added: 'We had so much fun and it was exciting to see what dish everyone had brought.
'We all sat around after the ceremony and had a little picnic, it was great and all the food was gone by the end so we didn’t waste any of it.
'There was quite a relaxed atmosphere and everyone was chatting to one another, and then when it got later everyone was enjoying the music and joining in with all the dances.
'We had a ball. The day went beautifully. It was really family-focused and emotional. Lots of people said it was the best wedding they have ever been to.'
But despite spending so little on their wedding, the couple intend to be more extravagant on their honeymoon as they will be spending a month in Berlin.
Georgina said: 'Although we spent a small amount, we do plan to spend a little more on our honeymoon.
'We are going back to Berlin, where we got engaged. We love it and we have friends living there, so we will still be able to save some money.'

Rapist collapses in jail after being told that his victim is HIV positive

      Richard Thomas

A man who has been jailed for raping a woman has been told that he could have contracted HIV as a result of the attack he inflicted upon his victim.
Richard Thomas, 27, collapsed when police informed him about the woman's medical status and is still waiting to hear if he has contracted the incurable virus.
Thomas, of Leigh in Greater Manchester, knew the woman and was aware that she has another illness but had not known about the HIV.
The court heard he was shocked when he was told and asked to be taken to hospital, Liverpool Crown Court heard.
He had let himself into her home in the middle of the night and she awoke to find him raping her.
'She froze and no words were exchanged. He pulled up his shorts and left,' said Harry Pepper, prosecuting.
'He was arrested and interviewed and said he had been drinking heavily, taken cocaine and ecstasy and could not recall the incident,' he added.
His barrister, Virginia Hayton, said that he still cannot recall the attack but when told about it he said that the woman 'would not lie, she tells the truth. If she says I have done it, I have done it'.
Jailing Thomas for five years and four months Judge Mark Brown said that he had committed 'this dreadful offence' while she lay asleep, having taken a sleeping tablet, and it had left her distressed and anxious.

He also ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life. Thomas pleaded guilty to raping the woman on July 20 this year.
Miss Hayton said that Thomas, who has previous convictions but none for sexual offences, is 'remorseful' and 'cannot understand why he did it and it is troubling him'.

Torment: A rapist recently jailed at Liverpool Crown Court will have to wait until Friday to find out if he has caught HIV from his victim

She said that he started using cannabis at the age of nine, drinking heavily at the age of 11, became addicted to ecstasy and cocaine at 13 and was put in care the following year.
He has been trying to contact his family but they want nothing to do with him and he will now be away from his partner and their young daughter and his two other older daughters from previous relationships.
Miss Hayton told the court that Thomas will not find out the result of his HIV test until Friday and has had the worry of the outcome hanging over him.
'It is his own fault, if he had not committed this offence he would not have placed himself in this position.'

'Sentenced to death for being thirsty': Christian woman speaks of how she was beaten and locked up in Pakistan after 'using Muslim women's cup to drink water'

Shocking: Christian woman Asia Bibi, pictured, has told of how she was given a death sentence
A Christian woman has spoken of how she was given a death sentence in Pakistan because she drank water from a well with a cup used by Muslim women.
Mother-of-five Asia Bibi, 46, has spent the last four years languishing in a prison cell after being condemned to hang following a conviction for blasphemy.
She denied the charge of defiling the name of the prophet Mohammed during an argument with Muslim co-workers but was convicted following a  trial.
With 97 per cent of Pakistan Muslim, hostility towards Christians is rife and the government refuses to release her because of angry protests by extremists.
Two government officials who have spoken out on her behalf have been murdered  - including Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti.
Now, as reported by the New York Post, Mrs Bibi a farm worker from rural Punjab  has released a memoir called 'Blasphemy'.
She describes how she has no idea how long she has left to live. Talking about how she ended up in her position, she says: 'I drank water from a well belonging to Muslim women, using “their” cup, in the burning heat of the midday sun.
'I, Asia Bibi, have been sentenced to death because I was thirsty. I’m a prisoner because I used the same cup as those Muslim women, because water served by a Christian woman was regarded as unclean by my stupid fellow fruit-pickers.'
In the book, Mrs Bibi describes how she ended up in this desperate situation on June 14, 2009 after going fruit-picking in the blazing sun.
Dripping with sweat as midday approached, she decided to head towards a well for a drink of water.

After pulling up a bucketful of water she used an old metal cup resting on the side of the well. But just seconds later she heard groans and noises from behind her.
One of the fruit pickers - who was also one of her neighbours - suddenly shouted that she cannot drink the water because it is forbidden by God.

Support: Ashiq Maseeh, husband of Asia Bibi, along with his daughters Sidra, second right, and Esham, left, speak to Pakistani Minister of Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti, right. He was later murdered

The woman shouted out, telling all of the fruit pickers that the water in the well had been dirtied because Mrs Bibi drank from their cup.
After being told by the angry fruit-pickers to convert to Islam to redeem herself, Mrs Bibi decided to stand up to the crowd and defend Christianity.
But after she is pushed and shoved by the group, Mrs Bibi ran home.
But, five days later, while fruit picking in another field, things became much worse. She was suddenly attacked by an angry crowd who accused her of insulting the Prophet Mohammed.

Anger: Protesters hold up placards while demanding the release of Mrs Bibi at a rally in Lahore in 2010

She was eventually taken battered and bruised to the village imam and told she can redeem herself  only by conversion to Islam or otherwise die.
She refused to convert but begged with the crowd that she did not insult their religion. They accused her of lying and repeatedly beat her until two policemen took her to a police station.
That day she was thrown into a prison cell and has remained locked up ever since.
Following her arrest in 2009, Mrs Bibi was held in the high-security District Jail Seikhupura, 22 miles north-west of Lahore. She has since been moved to a more remote prison.
She previously told how she feared being poisoned.
'I am given raw material to cook for myself, since the administration fears I might be poisoned, as other Christians accused of blasphemy were poisoned or killed in the jail.'
Her book was dictated to her husband from jail who then relayed it to a French journalist.
Half of the proceeds from the book will help support Mrs Bibi and her family in their quest for justice.

Florida man caught having sex in car with stepdaughter

          Barry Thompson

A Florida man busted with drugs was also caught having sex in his car with his stepdaughter, police say.
Barry Thompson, 53, was arrested Sunday after sheriff's deputies in Deltona found him in his car near the entrance of Pride Elementary School. They told him he wastrespassing on school property, according to the Sun Sentinel. His 29-year-old stepdaughter was in the passenger seat.
When asked why his pants were unzipped, Thompson reportedly confessed that he and his stepdaughter had a sexual relationship that they were trying to hide from his wife, who is the woman's mother.
After Thompson was arrested for trespassing on school grounds, deputies searched his car and found 51 prescription Dilaudid pills. Thompson also copped to being on pre-trial release for federal charges he's facing in Tennessee. One of the conditions of his release bans him from possessing prescription pills.
His stepdaughter was released with a warning.
Car sex in Florida has led to an arrest in the past.
Last year, Amanda Linscott was charged with armed robbery after pulling a gun on a man she was having sex with -- while he drove a car. She had asked the victim for money, and when he didn't fork any over, she held him at gunpoint. He lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a palm tree.
And in Dallas, an English teacher was arrested earlier this month for alleged inappropriate contact with a student. The underage student's mother reportedly found her son and Lesley Sharp having sex in the pool at their apartment complex. Sharp reportedly had sex with the student some 25 times in various locations, such as her car.

Meet Ali Hussain: the boy with the body of a 110-year-old who suffers from rare genetic disorder that has killed five of his siblings and afflicts only 80 people in the world (VIDEO)

A 14-year-old boy has been left with the body of a 110-year-old in India because he has a rare disease which makes him age eight times faster than normal.
Ali Hussain has seen five of his siblings die from the same condition called Progeria which is known to affect just 80 people worldwide.
Two of his brothers and three of his sisters have died from the disease in Bihar, the poorest state in India.

Sufferer: Ali Hussain, 14, has Progeria which makes his body age eight times faster than normal
Sufferer: Ali Hussain, 14, of Bihar, India, has Progeria which makes his body age eight times faster than normal.  The rare condition is known to affect only 80 people in the world, but has killed five of his siblings

Progeria causes rapid ageing and sufferers of the genetic disease are prone to arthritis, eye problems, heart disease and baldness.
Sufferers are not expected to live much beyond the age of 14 - but despite the grim prognosis Ali has refused to give up hope.
‘I very much want to live and I hope there is medicine for my condition out there. I’m not scared of death but my parents have suffered a lot,' he said.
'I’d love to live much longer for them. I don’t want to burden them with any more pain.’
Ali’s parents Nabi Hussain Khan, 50, and Razia, 46, are first cousins and were the product of an arranged marriage 32 years ago.

Their children Rehana, Iqramul, Gudiya and Rubina have all died from Progeria between the ages of 12 and 24.
A fifth child, a boy who died within 24 hours of being born, is also thought to have had the rare condition.
Nabia and Razia, who have had eight children in total, do have two healthy daughters - Sanjeeda, 20, who is married with two children of her own. Their youngest daughter Chanda, 10, also does not have Progeria.
When their first daughter, Rehana, was born in 1983 they had no idea anything was wrong at first. It was only after her second birthday when she couldn’t eat or walk properly did they visit a doctor.
But the doctor was baffled and he sent them home with some medicines. Progeria was so rare and poorly documented that most doctors had never heard of it.

RARE DISEASE WHICH HAS KILLED FIVE MEMBERS OF THE SAME FAMILY

Nabi Hussain Khan, 50, and his wife Razia, 46, have had eight children and six of them have suffered from Progeria.
            • Their first child was Rehana, a girl born in 1983 who died from Progeria in 2007 aged 24
            • Their second child Iqramul was born in 1987 and died in 2009, from Progeria aged 22
            • Progeria sufferer Gudiya, born in 1989, died in 2004 aged 15
            • Progeria sufferer Rubina, born in 1992 and died in 2004 aged 12
            • Sanjeeda, who is now 20, was born without the killer disease and is now married with two healthy children of her own
            • Progeria sufferer Ali was born in 1999 and is 14
            • The couple had an unnamed son who died within 24 hours of being born. They claim that he was also killer by Progeria
            • Their youngest daughter Chanda, aged 10, is also healthy.
Two years later when their son Iqramul was born, and showed the same symptoms, the family went back to the doctor.
But again, they were not offered any tests or possible diagnosis.
Nabi, who works as a gatekeeper at a factory earning 2,000 rupees - or £20 - a month said: ‘We never heard of the word Progeria, the doctors never mentioned it. They were stabbing in the dark; they were as clueless as us.
'If a doctor had perhaps told us that our children were suffering with some kind of genetic problem and we were connected we would’ve stopped having children. But nothing was said.’
Nabi and Razia carried on having children hoping they would conceive a healthy boy or girl eventually. Their wish was granted when they had Sanjeeda.
In 1995, after years visiting different doctors, a consultant in Kolkata finally diagnosed four of their children with Progeria and broke the devastating news that there was no cure for ay of them.
‘The diagnosis didn’t help,’ Nabi added. ‘People were sure there was a cure. No one in our community believed there was nothing that could be done.
'Neighbours and extended family tormented us for not getting them help, they couldn’t understand a disease with no cure.’
Life was made unbearable for the five children growing up with Progeria and they were mocked in school and called names like ‘big-eyed boy’ and ‘Patlu’ meaning skinny.
Eventually they all stopped going to school.
Ali, who weighs just 1st 8lbs, said: ‘None of us have had a childhood, we were confined to our homes.
'We had each other but that was it. We had no life. When we did go to school we were pushed and shoved, called names, kids tried to harm us. We can’t do much physically either; our lungs are so small we get breathless easily.

‘I would love to be a normal person who can play, go to school, do some sports, take some risks. Sometimes I get depressed but most of the time I make the most of the life I have.’
Ali is now the family’s only surviving Progeria sufferer. When his brother Ikramul died four years ago he was devastated.
‘Iqramul was my best friend,’ he said. ‘I was very young when my other siblings died, so it were just Ikramul and I for a long time.
'He was very strong and didn't pay any attention to the bullies. When he died I cried for weeks and couldn't eat but then I realised I’d be doing him a huge injustice if I crumbled. I have no one now, no friends, but I have to stay strong.’

Victim: Ali, 14, who weighs just 1st 8lbs, is not expected to live more than a few years longer

Ali and his parents are now supported by a Kolkata-based charity called SB Devi Charity.
Pediatrician Dr Chandan Chattopadhyay, from Kolkata, introduced the family to the organisation and now they help Ali pay for his medical needs.
Ali spends all of his time with his mother and sisters, Sanjeeda, 20 and Chanda, ten, and he believes there’s no one else like him in the world.
But when told about the famous annual Progeria Reunion, run by the Sunshine Foundation, he would love to attend.
‘It’s very lonely living this life, especially since my siblings have gone,' he added.
'I don’t know if there’s anyone else like me. I’d like to be in the company of other people like me again. And I know my brother would be proud of me for doing so.’

California porn industry shuts down after 'female performer' tests positive to HIV

Moratorium: The porn industry in California was shocked on Wednesday by the announcement that a performer had tested HIV positive
Moratorium: The porn industry in California was shocked on Wednesday by the announcement that a performer had tested HIV positive

The adult film industry in San Fernando Valley in California, announced a moratorium on the making of porn films Wednesday after an actor tested positive for HIV.
The performer was not immediately identified and officials didn't say when the positive test was recorded.
The actor's sex partners are currently being tested by doctors with Adult Production Health and Safety Services, which works with the porn industry.
X-Biz, an adult industry trade magazine, reported that the performer with the HIV-positive test is female and new to the industry says the Los Angeles Daily News.
'The moratorium will be lifted once the risk of transmission has been eliminated,' Diane Duke, executive director of the industry trade group the Free Speech Coalition, told the Associated Press in an e-mail.
She added that the actor is not believed to have been infected on a film set.
'In fact, since 2004 there have only been two cases of performers testing positive for HIV and neither of those situations involved on-set transmission,' Duke said.
'The current situation would bring the number to three cases in nearly 10 years, not just in Los Angeles but nationwide.'

The industry briefly put a similar moratorium in place last year after nearly a dozen performers were infected during a syphilis outbreak.
Word of the latest moratorium quickly drew critical responses from porn industry opponents. Among them was Michael Weinstein, whose group the AIDS Healthcare Foundation successfully lobbied voters last year to adopt an ordinance requiring actors use condoms in the making of most porn films.
'How many adult film performers have to become infected with an array of preventable sexually transmitted diseases — including HIV, which is not curable — before the porn industry actually complies with the law requiring condom use,' he said in a statement.
Since the ordinance's adoption, county officials have said they are investigating one violation.
Assemblyman Isadore Hall III, who is pushing for the state to adopt a similar law, called Wednesday's news 'devastating and preventable.'
'Exposing workers to this type of harm would not be accepted in any other industry in this nation,' the Los Angeles Democrat said.
The industry, which says its audience does not want to see condoms, is fighting the Los Angeles County measure in court.

After a federal judge ruled last week that the measure is constitutional industry officials promised to appeal.
Last year, porn star Mr. Marcus, 42, was discovered to have altered his positive syphilis test so that he could keep performing.
The porn industry imposed a 10-day moratorium in August while actors were treated and tested for the potentially lethal disease.
And in June of this year, Mr. Marcus was convicted of knowingly exposing two co-stars to syphilis and sentenced to 30 days in jail.
And in June 2004, the entire porn industry in California shut down after 4 performers tested positive for HIV, which caused 50 performers to be tested because of possible exposure.

Since that low-point, the adult industry has worked to self-regulate and increase testing procedures for stars.
And on Friday, U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson denied the motion by the adult film industry to stop the imposition of condoms being worn during filming.
Pregerson said that data from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health provided evidence that wearing condoms was a matter of health and did not violate the First Amendment.
The data found that since 2004, the health department got reports of 2,396 cases of chlamydia, 1,389 cases of gonorrhea, and in addition, five syphilis cases among adult film performers.

Woman who sent man to prison on false rape claim to serve 2 months in jail

            Elizabeth Paige Coast

A Hampton, Virginia woman who falsely accused a man of raping her -- landing him in prison for four years -- will spend two months in jail.
Elizabeth Paige Coast, 26, will be allowed to serve her sentence on weekends. She came forward in 2012, saying that she lied about Johnathan C. Montgomery raping her. He spent four years in prison over the false claim, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.
Coast told a judge Monday that when she was caught by her mother looking at pornography on the internet, she said she had been sexually assaulted, blamed her neighbor. The lie snowballed from there, she said.
"I had no idea how far this lie would go," Coast said.
During Montgomery's case, Coast testified that he molested her in 2000 when he was 14 and she was 10. Montgomery was convicted and sentenced to more than seven years in prison, according to the Washington Post.
When Montgomery was arrested, Coast said she stuck by her lie.
"I was petrified of the police ... everyone in my life knew," she said. "I was afraid of what my family would think."
Despite a lack of evidence in the trial, the judge took Coast's word over Montgomery's and sentenced the innocent man.
"It's just too awful," Montgomery told the Associated Press after his 2012 release. "She can't take it back. She did what she did and she has to deal with the consequences."
The consequences for sending an innocent man to prison for four years include paying $90,000 in restitution along with her jail sentence.
