British soldier kills six terrorists with one bullet

A British sniper in Afghanistan killed six insurgents with a single bullet after hitting the trigger switch of a suicide bomber whose device then exploded.
The 20-year-old marksman hit his target from 930 yards (850 metres) away, killing the suicide bomber and five others around him caught in the blast.
According to military officials, a second suicide vest packed with 44lbs of explosives was found nearby, leading them to conclude that the sniper prevented a major attack by the Taliban.
The soldier, a lance corporal in the Coldstream Guards, was believed to be using an L115A3 gun -- the Army’s most powerful sniper weapon. The sniper had previously killed a Taliban machine-gunner from 1,465 yards with his first shot on the tour of duty, The Daily Telegraph reports.
The incident occurred in December, but was only recently disclosed. British armed forces are decreasing their presence in Helmand province, and handing over the majority of security operations to the Afghan armed forces.
Since the conflict began in 2001, 448 UK soldiers have died in Afghanistan.

Addicted: Pakkirappa Hunagundi has been eating the brick, gravel and mud of Karnataka, India, for years

This Indian villager is addicted to eating bricks, gravel and mud, stomaching at least three kilos of his surroundings every day.
Pakkirappa Hunagundi, 30, first developed a taste for the seemingly inedible objects at the age of ten.
Ever since, he has snacked on walls and streets of Karnataka, India - and claims to suffer no ill effects.
Despite suffering from the condition since the age of 10, Mr Hunagundi claims to have no digestive side effects
Despite suffering from the condition since the age of 10, Mr Hunagundi claims to have no digestive side effects

The bizarre eating disorder is thought to be a form of Pica, an illness which gives sufferers an appetite for substances without any nutritional value.
Sporting a full set of normal-looking teeth, Mr Hunagundi blasts any suggestion he should curb the addiction.
He said: 'I have been eating bricks and rocks for around 20 years now. I love eating them. It has become a part of my life.
'I started at the age of 10. Now it feels like a necessity to me. I can skip meals, but not bricks or mud.
'I have suffered no side effects. My teeth are absolutely fine. I can bite into the hardest stone without a problem.'

The condition is believed to be a form of Pica, which gives sufferers an appetite for seemingly inedible objects

His mother has spent 20 years trying to dissuade her son from eating away parts of their house and village.
But Mr Hunagundi says the the building material tastes 'A1' - an Indian term for the best.
Branding it better than 'divine nectar', he says it is best served with a glass of water.
He said: 'Other than bricks, mud and stones, I don't like anything else. Even if you offer me divine nectar, I won't take it.
'My mother says don't eat all this. She keeps insisting, but even if she gives me chicken fry, I don't eat it. I don't like that at all.
'I need mud and bricks to eat. I can't help my own habit.'

One villager said: 'I have known him since childhood. He has always eaten mud and stones since then.
'Even a tiny stone in the mouth hurts so much. But he eats mud and stones everyday with so much ease. We find it extremely strange.'
After news of his brick eating spread, Mr Hunagundi has been inundated with people wanting to watch him going about his everyday activity.

One friend said: 'He has become very famous, but he is a poor man. We wish someone would help him.
'When we see him, we feel very bad. We have tried to convince him many times, but he does not listen. We have given up now.
'We advise him not to eat. But when he comes to our field, he goes around eating mud. He relishes hot charcoal too like a snack.'

Mr Hunagundi, who works as a labourer in his village and struggles to make ends meet, now intends to travel the country to showcase his act.
He said: 'My father died four years ago. I have to take care of my mother. We don't have any income. So I want to make use of my talent.
'I want to show people what I can do. I want to earn some money.'

Conjoined: The baby, born via C-section and weighing 7lbs 7oz, has two heads, two necks and two spines - but only one body

A baby with two heads has been born to a woman in India after she was too poor to have an ultrasound during her pregnancy.
Urmila Sharma, 28, gave birth to conjoined twins at Cygnus JK Hindu Hospital in Sonipat, Haryana, in northern India, yesterday morning.
The baby, born via C-section and weighing 7lbs 7oz, has two heads, two necks and two spines but only one body.

The baby girl, yet to be named, is under close observation in the neonatal intensive care unit, though doctors fear her chances of survival are slim.
Dr Shikha Malik delivered the baby and said: ‘The parents are very distressed and we are helping the family the best we can.’

Urmila and her husband Subhash, 32, who have one other daughter, were too poor to have an ultrasound during the pregnancy so complications had gone unnoticed.
Dr Malik added: ‘We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then.

‘Now the baby is born we will do our best to save her and we hope to operate once her condition is more stable.’
Conjoined twins who share a single body have dicephalic parapagus - an extremely unusual form of conjoinment.
Because they share the same body, it is not possible to separate dicephalic parapagus twins.

Gang rape survivor gang-raped again while in police protection in India

A gang rape survivor was kidnapped from police protectiongang-raped again on Tuesday night, strangled and dumped in the farm fields of Ferozabad on Wednesday apparently after the accused presumed she was dead. Though the kidnap took place in the presence of two constables posted for her security, the Ferozabad police rounded up her family members claiming they had packed her off to some place to implicate those who were accused of raping her.

The girl was found lying unconscious in the farm fields the next morning. She told the doctors she was gang-raped once again, strangled and dumped apparently after the perpetrators presumed she had died. Doctors at the district hospital too confirmed that the girl was gang-raped and injury marks on her neck suggested serious attempt to strangulate her. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ferozabad Rakesh Kumar described her condition as "not serious".

Two armed police constables posted for her security at her house claimed they were having dinner when the crime took place. When they heard a commotion they came out see what had happened but returned quickly to wear their shoes. By the time they put on with their shoes, the accused had escaped. Though this statement was offered by one of the constables while talking to TOI on phone from the scene of crime barely an hour after the incident, the SSP told TOI that the constables had informed him the kidnap never took place.

Prime accused in the first gangrape case is Dalbir Singh. His wife is a pradhan and has a strong influence across 18 villages in Firozabad. The couple are said to have secured over 30,000 votes for SP MLA Ramveer Singh Yadav, leading to his victory in the 2012 UP assembly elections. Ramveer Singh Yadav is another important part of Akshay Yadav's election campaign which could be the reason police did not take action. Despite a named FIR no action was initiated against the named accused in the gangrape case till date.

      Justice delayed by police laxity

The girl was kidnapped from her house in Jeragaon village under Eka police station of Feorzabad on November 5, last year. Initially police were reluctant to lodge an FIR and it was only when the district police chief intervened that a case was registered 14 days after the incident. The delay by police helped the rape accused as nothing substantial could be found against them in the medical examination of the girl 14 days after the crime.

On December 22, the survivor tested positive for pregnancy while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Lucknow. The family later sought intervention of then director general of police Rizwan Ahmed who directed the Ferozabad police to provide protection to the girl and also helped the family send the foetus for DNA profiling before the abortion. Ever since the police made no attempts whatsoever to secure samples of the named accused for DNA profiling to confirm if and who among them were responsible for the girl's condition.

A Georgia Tech graduate student who set himself on fire while apparently experimenting with bomb-making elements in his apartment last month has died, officials confirmed Thursday.
Saamer Akhshabi, an Iranian national, had burns on more than 90 percent of his body following the February 4 explosion in his apartment near the university, where Akhshabi was studying in the College of Computing.
Law enforcement officials investigating the case found in Akhshabi's apartment an apparent Molotov Cocktail and multiple plastic bottles filled with gasoline and kerosene.

Following the explosion, 26-year-old Akhshabi was taken in critical condition to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where he died on Thursday.
'We have worked closely with other law enforcement agencies during the investigation of this tragic incident,' Robert Connolly, interim police chief for Georgia Tech, said in an emailed statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. 'The FBI has relayed that, to date, they have not developed any information or evidence indicating criminal intent in this investigation.'
Law enforcement officials determined that Akhshabi wasn't a threat to the Georgia Tech community, but it remains unclear what he planned to do with the explosive material found in his apartment.

26yr-old woman disfigured by facial tumour reveals new face after transplant

Transformed: The 26-year-old, identified only as Joanna, underwent Poland's second ever facial transplant after neurofibromatosis – a genetic condition causing benign tumours - left her unable to chew, talk or swallow

A Polish woman who was disfigured by a huge facial tumour has revealed her new face at a press conference.
The 26-year-oldidentified only as Joanna, underwent Poland's second ever facial transplant after neurofibromatosis – a genetic condition causing benign tumours - left her unable to chew, talk or swallow.
During a press conference yesterday, Joanna thanked doctors and the family of the person who donated their face, and told journalists: 'I have nice eyebrows now'.
Speaking at the conference, Dr Adam Maciejewski, who performed both Joanna's surgery as well as the only other facial transplant in Poland, said: 'Joanna feels very good. She's getting better.'
He added that, once she has gets through the long-term rehabilitation programme she's still facing, Joanna hopes to return to education, possibly studying psychology 'as she would like to help others'
Earlier Dr Maciejewski, who led the 23-hour surgery last week, said he hopes the transplant of 80 per cent of the skin on her face will give her the ability to chew, talk or swallow.
Joanna was severely deformed by neurofibromatosis – a genetic condition that causes benign tumours to grow along the nerves.
          '
Difficult: Before the operation, Joanna struggled to chew, swallow or speak. Following the surgery she can now do all these things again

The condition can also cause bone problems, pressure on the spinal nerves, severe pain, learning disabilities and vision and hearing problems. There is no cure for it.
Although many people who have the condition inherit it from one of their parents, up to 50 per cent develop it randomly from a gene mutation before they are born.
Despite their alarming appearance, the growths and swellings - called neurofibromas and caused by a growth of cells - are not cancerous or contagious.
The facial tumour will not recur because the skin on her new face is from different genes, genetics expert Dr Anand Saggar told MailOnline.

Joanna had 23-hours of surgery to give her a new face. During the operation, 80 per cent of the skin on her face was replaced

In May, Dr Maciejewski and his colleagues performed Poland's first face transplant on a man whose face was torn off by a stone mason's machine. His recovery is said to be progressing.
The man's operation took 27 hours and was carried out just weeks after his accident.
It was thought to be the first face transplant to be carried out so soon after the damage had occurred - previous transplants have taken months, or even years, to prepare.
The man had to have his jaw, palate and eye sockets reconstructed.
The world's first full-face transplant was carried out on a Spanish farmer in March 2010.
Oscar had blown most of his face off with a gun during a hunting accident and was left unable to breathe, swallow or talk properly.

Husband who strangled wife to death in a row is jailed for life

The pair moved to the UK in 2005, although their relationship quickly broke down when Ali became involved in a dispute over land in Bangladesh with his wife's mother
            Mohammed Liaqat Ali
The pair moved to the UK in 2005, although their relationship quickly broke down when Ali became involved in a dispute over land in Bangladesh with his wife's mother
            Lilima Akter Munny
The pair moved to the UK in 2005, although their relationship quickly broke down when Ali became involved in a dispute over land in Bangladesh with his wife's mother.
The argument, which lasted for months, resulted in Ali stating he would kill his wife if the deeds were not changed to his name.
Ali eventually carried out his threats on the mother-of-two last summer, who was found by officers after being alerted by a family member when she failed to collect her children from school.
Police gained entry into the couples rented home in Birmingham in the early hours of June 14 to find her body at the foot of the stairs.
A post-mortem examination later found that she died from pressure to the neck.
Yesterday at Birmingham Crown Court, Ali was handed a life sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of 15 years behind bars.

Judge Patrick Thomas QC said: 'The background to the killing of your wife involves a dispute, which you took deeply to heart, about the title to land you had bought in Bangladesh.
'I am satisfied that a significant part of your character is a stark inability to understand that anybody who differs from your views could possibly be right.
'You also have a very short fuse. I am satisfied that you have resorted on previous occasions to using violence against your wife in the course of disputes, mainly about money.'
He added that Ali squeezed his wife's neck for a 'significant amount of time'.
After the murder, the court heard how Ali pretended to look for his wife when she didn't collect the children.
Robert Price, prosecuting said: 'The victim's two children had been waiting at school to be collected on the day their mother died.
'Ali had played a "cool and calculated game" by pretending to look for Lilima.'
Christopher Hotten QC, defending, there had been no significant pre-planning and no weapon had been used.
Speaking after the case, Detective Sergeant Ranj Sangha, who led the investigation, said: 'I'm satisfied with today's hearing which will see Ali behind bars for a considerable amount of time.
'This was a tragic case where a long running argument over land in Bangladesh has resulted in Lilima losing her life.
'It was a violent attack against an innocent woman in her home that has left her family completely devastated by what happened.
'Lilima has left behind her two young daughters whose lives will never be the same following this terrible crime.
'I hope that today's verdict brings some closure to Lilima's family and they can now begin to come to terms with what happened.'
