Boko Haram leader rejoices over Paris massacre as Muslims stage protests over latest cartoon

Nigerian extremist group, Boko Haram has hailed the Paris massacres.
In a video posted online yesterday, the group's leader Abubakar Shekau had this to say:  'We are indeed happy with what happened in France,' 'We are happy over what befell the people of France... as their blood was shed inside their country as they (try to) safeguard their blood.’
Meanwhile, Muslims have staged angry protests across the world from Turkey to the Philippines over Charlie Hebdo's decision to depict the Prophet Mohammed on its latest front cover.
Around three million copies of the French satirical newspaper hit the stands this morning for the first since the terror attack on its office which killed 12 people.
The front cover showed a weeping Mohammed, holding a sign reading 'I am Charlie' with the words 'All is forgiven' above him.
The print run has since been increased to five million after issues sold out within minutes.
Copies have since been changing hands on eBay for three-figure sums as customers rush to get their hands on the edition.
But many Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the prophet and reacted with dismay - and occasionally anger - to the latest cover image.
Some felt their expressions of solidarity with Charlie Hebdo after last week's attack had been rebuffed, while others feared the cartoon would trigger yet more violence.
Meanwhile, Al Qaeda in Yemen claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on Charlie Hebdo, saying it was ordered by the jihadist network's global chief to avenge the French magazine's cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
In a video entitled 'A message regarding the blessed battle of Paris', Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) said that it had financed and plotted the assault on the weekly that left 12 people dead and shocked France.
But it said the orders had come from the very top of the global jihadist network - Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian doctor who succeeded Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden after his death in 2011.
'We, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, claim responsibility for this operation as vengeance for the messenger of Allah,' Nasser al-Ansi, one of AQAP's chiefs, said in the video.
Leading Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar, formerly a member of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), praised the 'heroic and rare attack' in France, hailing the Kouachi brothers as 'two soldiers of Islam... who humiliated France.'
France 'thought that it was immune to the strikes of the mujahedeen,' he said in a statement.
Across Europe, there was high demand for scarce copies of the latest edition and several newspapers ran extracts from Charlie Hebdo.
Spain's El Pais published two pages of the cartoons with Spanish translation, though it did not include any images of the prophet.
A small Italian newspaper, Il Fatto Quotidiano (The Daily Fact), published Charlie Hebdo as a 16-page supplement, in French with Italian translations of the captions.
'You're putting the lives of others at risk when you're taunting bloodthirsty and mad terrorists,' said Hamad Alfarhan, a 29-year old Kuwaiti doctor.
In the Philippines, there were angry protests at the front cover and also the perceived double standards by the West.
Placards by demonstrators in Marawi were held aloft which accused the West of remaining silent over the deaths of Muslims and that said 'You are Charlie, I love Mohammed'.
In one rally a picture of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was set on fire and banners waved that declared there would be no apology from the Islamic world for the Paris massacre.
Mr Netanyahu became a central figure in the response to the attacks after four Jewish shoppers were killed by one of the Islamic fanatics at a kosher deli the day after the Charlie Hebdo shootings.
Outrage: Many Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the prophet and reacted with dismay - and occasionally anger - to the latest cover image including at this demonstration in Marawi in the Philippines
Meanwhile, Abbas Shumann, deputy to the Grand Sheik of Cairo's influential Al-Azhar mosque, said the new image was 'a blatant challenge to the feelings of Muslims who had sympathised with this newspaper.'
But he said Muslims should ignore the cover and respond by 'showing tolerance, forgiveness and shedding light on the story of the prophet.'
An angry reaction, he said, will 'not solve the problem but will instead add to the tension and the offense to Islam.'
In Jordan, the Muslim Brotherhood said it would stage a protest after Friday prayers in Amman in response to the paper's Mohammed cartoon.

Spokesman Murad Adaileh said the brotherhood strongly condemned both the killings and the 'offensive' against the prophet.

Hundreds of children detained by the Philippine govt in preparation for Pope's visit

Street children as young as five are being caged in brutal detention centres alongside adult criminals in a cynical drive to smarten up the Philippines capital ahead of a visit by Pope Francis this week.
Hundreds of boys and girls have been rounded up from doorways and roadsides by police and officials and put behind bars in recent weeks to make the poverty-racked city more presentable when Pope Francis arrives tomorrow, a MailOnline investigation has found.
In a blatant abuse of the country's own child protection laws, the terrified children are locked up in filthy detention centres where they sleep on concrete floors and where many of them are beaten or abused by older inmates and adult prisoners and, in some cases, starved and chained to pillars.
There, guiltless children are kept behind bars, made to go to the toilet in buckets and fed leftovers which they eat from the floor. There is no schooling or entertainment for the youngsters who are held sometimes for months before being freed.
Adult convicts are kept in a pen next to separate compounds holding boys and girls and freely pass between the pens at certain times of the day, inmates and regular visitors to the centre told us, while officials either ignore or fail to spot abuse and attacks.
In poignant scenes, Mak-Mak – an abandoned child with no ID – at first seen frightened but then beamed with delight as charity workers told him he was being taken from his caged pen to children's home in the countryside. 'Are there toys there?' was his first question.

'These kids are totally without protection. They have no legal representation. They are just put in jail and left to fend for themselves.'
Pope Francis famously washed the feet of inmates in a youth detention centre in Rome in 2013 but Father Shay, who has run a mission to help children in the Philippines for 40 years, said: 'Sadly, there is no way the Pope will be visiting these detention centres in Manila.

Meanwhile, however, the only prospect of an escape from the hellish conditions behind bars for countless children will come when the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church – shielded from their suffering – flies back to Rome next Monday. (JAN 19th)

Six million people are expected to attend an open air mass conducted by Pope Francis in Manila's Rizal Park on Sunday, which will watched by a global TV audience and officials appear determined to ensure that urchins are hidden from view.

40 presidents join 4 million protesters in solidarity against Charlie Hebdo attacks in France

On 11 January 2015, about 3.7 million people including President Hollande and more than 40 world leaders led a "unity rally", organised to show unity after the terror attacks on a French satirical magazine (Charlie Hebdo), that left 12 people dead and 11 others wounded.
This turned out to be the largest public rally in France since World War II.
Similar demonstrations and candle vigils spread to other cities outside of France as well,
Earlier on 7 January 2015, two masked gunmen armed with AK-47 assault rifles, a shotgun, and a RPG launcher stormed Charlie Hebdo's Paris headquarters.  They opened fire with automatic weapons while shouting "Allahu Akbar", as captured in a video. They shot and killed 11 people (10 in the offices and 1 maintenance worker), and wounded 11 others. Two of those killed were police officers.
Before the shooting, the gunmen burst into number 6 Rue Nicolas-Appert, where the magazine's archives were based and shouted, "Is this Charlie Hebdo?", before realising they had the wrong address and left. They then went to the magazine's headquarters at number 10 Rue Nicolas-Appert.  Outside, they encountered cartoonist Corinne "Coco" Rey. She reported the two armed and hooded men spoke perfect French and threatened to kill her toddler daughter whom she had just picked up from day care if she did not type in the code to open the door to the building.
The armed men sprayed the lobby with gunfire immediately upon entering the building.  It was Charlie Hebdo's first news conference of the year. Journalist Laurent Léger stated that the meeting was interrupted by what they initially thought was the sound of prank firecrackers, but was actually the prior gunfire which had occurred in the lobby. "We still thought it was a joke. The atmosphere was still joyous," he recalled.
Not long after, the gunmen burst into the meeting room and called out Charb's name to target him before opening fire on the group. The shooting lasted five to ten minutes. The gunmen aimed at heads and killed their victims execution-style.
A female journalist, Sigolène Vinson, survived and stated that one of the shooters aimed at her but spared her life. The attackers displayed a reluctance to harm women and told her that, "I'm not killing you because you are a woman and we don't kill women but you have to convert to Islam, read the Qu'ran and wear a veil." She said he then left, shouting, "Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!"
The gunmen then left the scene, shouting, "We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad. We have killed Charlie Hebdo!"  They escaped in a getaway car, and drove to Porte de Pantin, hijacking another car on the way (corner of Rue de Meaux and Passage de la Brie), forcing its driver out.  As they drove away, they ran over a pedestrian and shot at responding police officers.
It was initially believed there were three suspects.  One identified suspect turned himself in at a Charleville-Mézières police station.  Seven acquaintances of the Kouachi brothers were also taken into custody.  Jihadist flags and Molotov cocktails were found in an abandoned getaway car, a black Citroën C3.

In 2008, Charlie Hebdo was criticised for running Danish cartoons caricaturing the Prophet Mohammed. The magazine defended the publication in the name of freedom of expression.

After the attack

The attack received immediate and swift condemnation from dozens of governments worldwide. Statements of condolence and outrage were offered by many international leaders including Barack ObamaVladimir PutinStephen HarperAngela MerkelMatteo RenziDavid Cameron and Tony Abbott.
Some English-language media outlets republished the controversial cartoons on their websites in the hours following the shootings. Prominent examples included Bloomberg News, The Huffington Post,  The Daily Beast,  Gawker, Vox and The Washington Free Beacon.
Other news organisations covered the shootings without showing the controversial drawings, such as The New York Times, New York Daily News,  CNN, Al-Jazeera America, Associated Press and The Daily Telegraph.  Two websites accused the latter group of self-censorship. The BBC, which previously had guidelines against all depictions of Muhammad, showed a depiction of him on a Charlie Hebdo cover and announced that they were reviewing these guidelines.
Reporters Without Borders criticised the presence of leaders from Egypt, Russia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, saying "On what grounds are representatives of regimes that are predators of press freedom coming to Paris to pay tribute to Charlie Hebdo, a publication that has always defended the most radical concept of freedom of expression?"

Muslim reactions

Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Morocco, Algeria, and Qatar denounced the incident, as did Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, the leading Sunni institution of the Muslim world.  Various Islamic organisations, like the French Council of the Muslim Faith, the Muslim Council of Britain and Islamic Forum of Europe spoke out against the attack, with Sheikh Abdul Qayum and Imam Dalil Boubakeur stating, "[We] are horrified by the brutality and the savagery." The Union of Islamic Organisations of France released a statement condemning the attack, along with Imam Hassen Chalghoumi saying that those behind the attack "have sold their soul to hell". The vice president of the U.S. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community also condemned the attack, saying, "The culprits behind this atrocity have violated every Islamic tenet of compassion, justice, and peace."
The League of Arab States released a collective condemnation of the attack. Al-Azhar University also released a statement denouncing the attack, stating that violence was never appropriate regardless of "offence committed against sacred Muslim sentiments".
However, a British Islamist, Anjem Choudary, wrote an editorial in USA Today in which he professes justification from the words of Muhammad that those who insult prophets should face death, and that Muhammad should be protected to prevent further violence.  Saudi-Australian Islamic preacher Junaid Thorne said: "If you want to enjoy 'freedom of speech' with no limits, expect others to exercise 'freedom of action'."
Bahujan Samaj Party leader Yaqub Qureishi, a Muslim MLA and former Minister from Uttar Pradesh in India, offered a reward of Description: INR510 million (US$8 million) to the perpetrators of the Charlie Hebdo shootings.  Qureshi was in headlines in 2006 after declaring a reward of the same value to anyone who would kill the Danish cartoonist, Kurt Westergaard, who had created a controversial cartoon of the Muhammad.
The attack was also praised by ISIS. ISIS militant Abu Mussab from Syria praised the massacre. Al-Shabaab, a militant Islamist organisation in Somalia, also praised the attackers.
Two Islamist newspapers in Turkey ran headlines that drew ire on social media for justifying the attack: the Yeni Akit ran an article entitled "Attack on the magazine that provoked Muslims", and Türkiye ran an article entitled "Attack on the magazine that insulted our Prophet".
"Afghanistan rally hails Charlie Hebdo attackers as 'heroes'. Hundreds in southern Afghanistan rallied to praise the killing of 12 people at the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo, calling the two gunmen "heroes" who meted out punishment for cartoons disrespectful to Islam's prophet, officials said Saturday. The demonstrators also protested President Ashraf Ghani's swift condemnation of the bloody attack on the satirical newspaper," reported Yahoo Canada, on a Reuters wire.

The phrase Je suis Charlie (French for "I am Charlie") has come to be a common worldwide sign of solidarity against the attacks.  Many demonstrators used the slogan to express solidarity with the magazine. The United States Embassy in Paris changed its Twitter profile picture to the "Je suis Charlie" placard.

Over 50% of pregnant Brazilian women choose Caesareans over natural birth 'to protect their sex lives'

Figures from Brazil's National Health Agency reveal 52 per cent of births are via Caesarean section - almost four times the rate recommended by the World Health Organisation (file picture)
Figures from Brazil's National Health Agency reveal 52 per cent of births are via Caesarean section - almost four times the rate recommended by the World Health Organisation (file picture)

A rising number of pregnant women in Brazil are choosing to give birth via Caesarean section to prevent permanent changes to their sex lives.
The South American country's Ministry of Health is launching a crackdown on the so-called 'C-section epidemic' after new figures revealed 52 per cent of births are Caesareans.
The National Health Agency (NAS) figures reveal 84 per cent of these deliveries take place in private hospitals, and are funded by health insurance policies.
In state hospitals, 40 per cent of deliveries are via C-section.The World Health Organisation recommends C-section delivery rates are no higher than 10 to 15 per cent of all deliveries.
As with all surgery, C-sections carry a certain level of risk - the wound could become infected and the baby could develop breathing difficulties, for example.
The rise in C-sections is being driven by womens' concerns over their sex lives post delivery, and unscrupulous doctors promoting the procedure to EARN MORE in health insurance cases, experts said.
Vera Fonseca, director of the Brazilian Federation of Gynecological Associations, told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo: 'The Brazilian woman is concerned with her sexuality and fears that giving birth will alter the perineum [the area between the vagina and the anus], which is a myth.'
In the US, just over 32 per cent of all births are Caesareans, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Arthur Chioro, Brazil's minister of health, called the country's obsession with C-sections a 'public health problem'.
He said: 'The epidemic of Caesareans we see today in this country is unacceptable and there is no other way to treat it than as a public health problem.
'What's normal are normal births.'
Mr Chioro added: 'We cannot accept C-sections performed on the basis of economic power or convenience.
'There is no justification (whether) financial, technical or scientific, that you can (argue for the) high rate of Caesarean sections in health insurance.'We have to reverse this situation that has developed in the country. The Caesarean epidemic today is unacceptable and there is no way to treat it merely as a public health problem.'
In a bid to crackdown on doctors promoting the procedures to line their own pockets, health bosses now require all medics to inform the government of prenatal information on all births.
And they will now no longer be able to book elective C-sections, only choosing the delivery method after a woman has gone into labour.
Doctors will also be obliged to give patients information of the risks of performing C-sections, International Business Times reports.
Under the requirements Mr Chioro announced, health insurance companies will have to provide patients with information about the percentage of Caesareans performed by individual doctors and hospitals.
Failure to do so within 15 days will result in large fines.
The new rules, which take force in six months, will affect the nearly 24 million Brazilian women who have private health plans that cover obstetric services.

Eyeball man pleads guilty to murder

Jason Barnum

A man nicknamed "Eyeball" because of a tattoo that darkened the white part of his right eye pleaded guilty to shooting an Anchorage police officer.
Jason Barnum was sentenced to 22 years in prison Friday in Anchorage Superior Court.
KTUU reported (http://bit.ly/147jkRS ) the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary and third-degree felony in possession of a weapon.
The shooting happened when police were investigating home burglaries and car thefts. Officers were inspecting a hotel in 2012 when Barnum opened fire from a bathroom. Two officers shot back, striking Barnum in the arm, and one officer was injured. Barnum later admitted to the committing thefts and burglaries to feed a heroin addiction.
In court, Anchorage Police Department Chief Mark Mew took the stand to argue for a harsh sentence. "I think Jason Barnum decided a long time ago that his life was about being hostile to people," Mew said.
Tattoos of skulls cover Barnum's head, which didn't go unnoticed in court.
"I'd like you to take a look at Mr. Barnum," Mew said. "He has the right to do this to himself and to express himself. We can't sentence him for that, but I think we can consider a guy's attitude and his behavior."
But when Barnum took the stand, he was reflective about what happened.
"I'm humbled by what the chief said. I was out there pretty much running crazy," Barnum told the court. "Everybody knows that I'm not the nicest guy. I understand that what I did was wrong. I can't take none of it back."
In explaining his behavior, Barnum deflected some blame to the Alaska Department of Corrections, saying he left prison in 2010 with nowhere to go and nothing to do. "I was living on the streets, and I tried to get a job, but of course my beautiful face didn't allow me to do that," he said.
Anchorage Superior Court Judge Jack Smith said the blame falls on Barnum, whether the system failed, the drugs made him act erratically, or anything else. However, he said the sentence this time includes parole and will likely provide more assistance when he is released and in his mid-fifties.
"It's going to be difficult, but hopefully it'll be easier than the last time," Smith said.
Barnum already served two years of his sentence.

World's richest athlete, Floyd Mayweather, flaunts his wealth on social media

From left to right: Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari 458 Spider, Ferrari 458 Spider. Bugatti Grand Sport, Bugatti Veyron, Bugatti Veyron... and a private jet worth a staggering £30m in the background of Mayweather's picture

He is the world’s best-paid athlete and Floyd Mayweather certainly knows how to spend his hard-earned wealth.
The pound-for-pound boxing king, who earned £66.1million according to Forbes magazine last year, posted a tantalising picture of what you can buy when money is no object.
Mayweather posted a snap online of himself in front of a fleet of luxury cars, as well as his own private jet, and wrote: 'Welcome to my toy world! Who wants to come out and play?'
This isn't the first time the 37-year-old has taken to social media to brag about his wealth. He recently posted photos online of his collections of shoes, sunglasses and watches.
Away from the boxing ring and the cars, Mayweather has colourful and often controversial past.
In 2002, he was charged with two counts of domestic violence and received a six-month suspended sentence, while two years later he was again on the wrong side of the law - handed a one-year suspended sentence for battery of two women.
Another suspended sentence followed 12 months later, this time for 90 days.
Mayweather did spend time in prison in 2011, however, when found guilty of battery against his ex-girlfriend. He was behind bars for 90 days.
One man who isn't impressed with Mayweather's latest act of ostentation is his great rival Manny Pacquiao.
The 36-year-old Filipino, who has been attempting to arrange a fight with Mayweather for years, said on Monday: 'Floyd brags about his lifestyle and everything! I don't care! I'm just waiting here for him to sign the contract!'
If the fight does happen, both boxers will find themselves in line for their greatest ever financial windfalls, with some predicting the bout could be worth as much as $250m (£163m).
Mayweather also bought 15-year-old son Koraun a Bentley golf cart for his birthday in November, posting: 'My son @kingkoraun wanted a Bentley golf cart for his 15th birthday so I made it appear. Stay on the look out for his gift for his 16th birthday!'
That came just days after Mayweather had uploaded a photo of stacks of $100 bills on his table and before that similar amounts in bed with him.

2 yr-old boy accidentally kills mother with gun

Tragic accident: A two-year-old boy accidentally killed his a 29-year-old mother Veronica Rutledge (left) at an Idaho Walmart store after reaching into her bag and firing her hidden gun
Veronica Rutledge (left)
A mother has been shot dead by her two-year-old son who found a gun from her handbag.
Veronica Rutledge, 29, was accidentally shot and killed by the toddler while she was shopping in a Walmart store in Hayden, Idaho.
The incident was captured on video surveillance and several store employees also witnessed the shooting.
Kootenai County sheriff's spokesman Stu Miller said Ms Rutledge had a concealed weapons permit, allowing her to legally carry the gun.

According to police, the boy was sitting in the trolley when he found the concealed weapon while in the electronics department on the morning of 31st December 2014.

According to authorities, she was visiting from her home town of Blackfoot, Idaho and looking to spend gift cards the family received over the holidays.
The gun was believed to have been brought into the home by the mother's boyfriend.

Idaho, a rugged and largely rural state, is among the US states with the highest percentage of Americans who own guns.
The victim's father-in-law, Terry Rutledge said Ms Rutledge 'was a beautiful, young, loving mother'.
'She was not the least bit irresponsible,' Mr Rutledge added. 'She was taken much too soon.'
According to The Spokesman-Review, the victim was a nuclear research scientist and was employed by Idaho National Laboratory.

The mother-of-one was visiting family with her husband Colt, who she married in 2009, and was spending the day with her son and nieces, according to the newspaper.

In neighboring Washington state, a three-year-old boy was seriously injured in November when he was accidentally shot in the face by a four-year-old neighbor.
The boy was wounded as the children played in a home in Lake Stevens, about 30 miles north of Seattle.
In April, a two-year-old boy apparently shot and killed his 11-year-old sister while they and their siblings played with a gun inside a Philadelphia home.

Thief blown off his feet after attempt to bomb ATM backfired (Video)

A  thief who tried to blow up an ATM in the Northern Territory yesterday was knocked flat on his back by the blast.
He's seen in the surveillance video standing near the ATM. There's no one else around at 3.45am and all appears normal but then he looks to his left, takes something out of his pocket, and then glances to his right.
Normal, that is, until he lights something which is unclear but what happens next catches the culprit completely by surprise.
He places the explosive on the ATM but the force of the blast is so great - it throws him across the pavement.
Clearly stunned by the impact and perhaps dumbfounded by his massive fail, the man runs off like a scalded cat - without any cash and with pride severely dented.
NT Police told NT News that when they arrived they found the ATM had been completely destroyed.
And it's not the first time, according to NT Police, that the bandit has struck. On this occasion he targeted the ANZ in Winnellie but is wanted for a similar attack on the nearby NAB ATM on Christmas Eve.

'The offender is described to be a male of Caucasian appearance, medium build and at the time of the incident he was wearing dark coloured knee length shorts, a dark T-shirt, a dark hat, thongs and wore a light coloured shirt over his face,' Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Day told the newspaper.

All appears normal here, except for the shirt over his face. The would-be bandit seems set to take money out of the ATM, the legitimate way
