Man slit girl's throat after she convinced her mother to dump him

from left to right, Miguel Ruiz Lobo and Martha Guzman

Miguel Ruiz Lobo, 42, has been accused of killing 11-year-old Martha Guzman after the girl talked her mother into breaking up with him.
On June 22, Guzman was found dead inside the home she shared with her mother and three-year-old brother. Her neck and wrists had been slashed. Her death was originally believed to be a suicide since Guzman had a history of cutting, but autopsy results revealed her death was a homicide.
Focus quickly turned to Ruiz, the ex-boyfriend of Guzman’s mother. Ruiz used to live with the family, but Guzman’s mother had broken up with him five months ago at the urging of her daughter.
During their investigation, police noted Ruiz had fresh scratches on his arms and face, so they took a swab of his DNA and sent it off to be tested against fingernail scrapings collected from Guzman. He told police he had not seen the girl in days, but police had proof that was not true.
They had surveillance footage from a neighbor’s security camera that showed Ruiz entering Guzman’s apartment at approximately 10:28 A.M. on the day of the murder, and leaving the apartment approximately 30 minutes later. No one else is seen entering the apartment until Guzman’s mother came home and found her daughter at approximately 2:28 P.M.
Police say they knew Ruiz was lying to them about his involvement in the girl’s death from the beginning, but they had to be patient and wait for a case to be built against him.
That wait ended when the DNA they collected from Ruiz matched the samples taken from Guzman’s fingernails. Before 220 pound and 6-feet, 4-inches tall Ruiz overpowered Guzman, the little girl had fought for her life.
“We believe that he subdued her quickly, and during that time is when she was able to get in a few scratches on his face and on his arms. He’s such a huge monster of a man that could control her easily,” said City of Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa. “He restrained her and after he killed her, he slashed her wrists. The wrists were slashed so far deep, that it almost came off her arm.”
Ruiz was arrested on Monday on first degree murder and occupied burglary charges. He has since invoked his right to council and is no longer talking to authorities.
Investigators feel they have a clear motive; Ruiz blamed the 11-year-old for ending his three year relationship with the girl’s mother, so he slit her throat as revenge.
“It all stems from the little girl and her mother did not get along with Mr. Ruiz, who was the boyfriend of the mother, and eventually the little girl convinced mom to break up with Mr. Ruiz,” said Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa. “Mr. Ruiz was not happy about it. He returned to the house when the girl was alone. He used a key that he knew the whereabouts of the key, and we believe he entered and killed the young lady.”
Guzman’s mother said she never thought her daughter committed suicide and was just waiting for police to prove it. “From the moment I found her, I never thought she committed suicide because I know my daughter,” she said.

4 million girls, women in Iraq to undergo female genital mutilation as 'ordered by jihadists'.

There was anger last night after it emerged militant group ISIS may have ordered compulsory female genital mutilation (FGM) for all women and girls in a region of Iraq now under its control.
The extremist group has seized large swathes of the troubled country's northern regions and is now said to be imposing its hardline Sharia rules on the population.
The United Nations expressed deep concern yesterday at reports all girls and women in and around city of Mosul are to being forced to undergo FGM procedures.
Scroll down for video
A UN spokesman in Geneva said that they were seeking clarity and trying to establish the facts.
Such a 'fatwa' issued by the Sunni Muslim fighters would potentially affect 4million women and girls, according to UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Iraq Jacqueline Badcoc.
'We have current reports of imposition of a directive that all female girl children and women up to the age of 49 must be circumcised.
'This is something very new for Iraq, particularly in this area, and is of grave concern and does need to be addressed,' Badcock said.
'This is not the will of Iraqi people, or the women of Iraq in these vulnerable areas covered by the terrorists,' she added.
But doubts emerged on social media about the basis for the report. One document posted on Twitter suggested it may be a year old and have been issued by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, the group's previous name.

The hardline group, whose members are pictured in Syria, have been parading through the streets of Iraq with military equipment since seizing large swathes of the country
The hardline group, whose members are pictured in Syria, have been parading through the streets of Iraq with military equipment since seizing large swathes of the country
The owner of one Twitter account, which contains multiple images of the decapitated heads of Syrian soldiers, said the claims were 'a lie'.
Other Internet comments, including from Middle East analysts, questioned whether the order would fit with the cultural traditions of the region.
There was no immediate comment from ISIS, which has led an offensive through northern and western Iraq.
The U.N is said to have 'zero contact' with the miltants, but works through tribal leaders in the affected areas, Badcock said.
She added: 'I can't give you any more details until we have been on the ground to get information.'
FGM, the partial or total removal of external female genitalia, is a tradition practised widely in many African and Muslim countries and often justified as a means of suppressing a woman's sexual desire to prevent 'immoral' behaviour.
Worldwide, more than 130 million girls and women have undergone FGM and more than 700 million women alive today were children when they were married.
The practice of FGM previously occurred only in isolated pockets of Iraq, mainly Kurdistan, according to Badcock.
Mosul city currently has some two million people, more than half of whom are women as there are many female-headed households in the area, she said. Several more million people live in surrounding areas, she added.
'There are reports of rapes of women, of forced marriages,' Badcock added.

Businessman tortured, raped woman during job interview in his home.

Mark Giannini is accused of raping a 26-year-old woman in his home.
A mother of four who went to seek employment as a house keeper was reportedly drugged and raped by the employer during the job interview.
The suspect is businessman Mark Giannini, the co-founder of IT company Secvice Assurance, according to WREG . He allegedly repeatedly raped the 26-year-old for several hours until she blacked out on June 19.
The woman told sheriff's investigators she allowed Giannini to drive her to his home for an overview of the house cleaning and office work he needed someone to do.
Giannini allegedly served her "a drink that tastes like a pop-up." The woman told Giannini that she wanted to leave but he began kissing her aggressively and pulling her hair.
The crime report says Giannini performed several sexual acts on the woman against her will and forced her to consume urine, blood and fecal matter, telling her it was part the job interview, according to WBTV.
The woman says she blacked out and doesn't know how she got back to her room in a nearby Motel 6 where her family found her.Relatives brought her to a hospital where ER staff said she was frothing at the mouth and exhibiting symptoms similar to someone who had overdosed on drugs.
An attorney for Giannini said his client is not guilty and claims he was set up,according to WNCN.
Detectives arrived at Giannini's gated home on June 23, but a man who answered the intercom system said the suspect was not home and he refused to allow the investigators to enter the property, according to another affidavit. The detectives forced themselves onto the grounds and found wet footprints leading into the woods from the back of the home.
Giannini soon presented himself to officers on the street outside of his home. He was "perspiring profusely and had fresh cuts and scratches on his legs," according to a detective's sworn statement.
The subsequent search turned up more than $16,000 in cash, 24 firearms and various pills of Viagra, Xanax, hydrocodone and other medications.
Detectives also removed an inventory of items spanning several pages that includes samples of human hair, boxes and baskets of women's panties and shoes sorted by size, a sheriff's badge and ID , handcuffs, duct tape, sex toys and nipple clamps.
Giannini has been charged with two counts of aggravated rape, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of a firearm, according to Fox 13.
He was released after posting $150,000 bond.

Family friend arrested for hugging baby to death

    Hugging Death
    Robert Kemp
26-year-old man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter more than a year after he hugged a 14-month-old child so tightly that the boy stopped breathing and died, Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said Wednesday.
Robert Kemp was taken into custody Tuesday and released on $10,000 bond the next day. Kemp is described as a family friend in a news release from Ravenell.
An arrest warrant said Kemp killed the child "by giving him a bear hug, squeezing the victim so tight that the victim stopped breathing as a result."
Jaylen Harris died from asphyxiation, on June 27, 2013, Orangeburg County Chief Deputy Coroner Sean Fogle said.
Kemp told deputies he was playing with the child when he started to rub his eyes like he was tired, so he put the toddler in his crib on his back with his bottle, according to an incident report.
Kemp said he went to the kitchen to do some chores and realized he hadn't heard the boy in a while. He went back into the bedroom and noticed the toddler on his stomach, unconscious with his hands balled into fists, according to the report.
Another person in the home, whose name was blacked out on the report, started CPR, but the boy could not be resuscitated, according to the report. If convicted, Kemp faces up to five years in prison.
The sheriff's release didn't say why it took a year to bring charges, and a spokeswoman for the sheriff said in an email no more information would be released.
Kemp lives in Columbia, and a woman who identified herself as his mother when she answered the phone offered to give her son a message that was not returned.
The boy's family created a website at GiveForward.com and is asking for donations to help cover his funeral costs.
"Baby Jaylen Harris passed away in his sleep of natural causes. He was 14 months old. He was the sweetest, happiest baby you would ever meet. He was a blessing and a joy to this family," they wrote on the website.
A message left at a phone number listed for the baby's mother was not returned.

Teacher threatened to fail student for refusing to have sex with her - Cops

    DANIELLE WATKINS
    Danielle Watkins
A high school English teacher in Connecticut was charged with sexual assault and selling marijuana stemming from an alleged relationship with one of her students.
Officers in Stamford have accused Danielle Watkins, 32, of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student and then threatening to fail him when he tried to break off the relationship, NBC Connecticut reports.
The Stamford Police Department said the student, who attended Stamford High School, told authorities that he’d had several sexual encounters with Watkins in her car between September 2013 and June 2014. The alleged sex took place during school hours but not on school grounds, he told police.
The teen also alleges Watkins, who is married with two kids, sent him naked pictures of herself and allowed him to use her car even though she was aware he was not licensed to drive.
The alleged victim says Watkins gave him marijuana, which they smoked with one of his friends on and off school grounds during school hours, WTNH TV reports.
When the student allegedly tried to dump Watkins, he told police she assaulted him and accused him of being with someone else. Watkins also threatened to fail him unless the relationship continued, police said.
Shortly after the allegations were reported, police executed a search warrant of Watkins's car during a motor vehicle stop.During the search, police said Watkins tried to hide her cell phone and was allegedly verbally combative after marijuana was discovered in the vehicle.
The car and phone were seized. A forensic examination of the phone revealed more than 2,000 text messages to the teen, several hundred phone calls to him and naked pictures of Watkins, according to the Stamford Advocate.
Superintendent Winifred Hamilton said Watkins has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
"We are aware of the allegations," Stamford School District Superintendent Winifred Hamilton said, according to the Courant newspaper. "We take these issues very seriously and always act to protect the welfare of our students."
Watkins turned herself into police on Thursday and was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault and sale of marijuana.
In addition, Watkins faces charges for selling marijuana and risk of injury to a minor for alleged involvement with a 15-year-old student, possibly the alleged victim's friend.
She was released after posting $100,000 bail.
Her next court date is July 31 in Connecticut State Superior Court.

French woman who compared country's black minister to monkey on Facebook is jailed

from left to right, justice minister Christiane Taubira  and Anne-Sophie Leclere

A female member of France’s far-right National Front party has been sent to prison for nine months for comparing the country’s black justice minister to a monkey on Facebook.
Anne-Sophie Leclere, a 34-year-old mother of three who was due to be a candidate in local elections this year, must also pay a fine equivalent to almost £30,000, and has been banned from seeking office for five years.
Her party immediately condemned a sentence which it believes is among the harshest ever handed down over a social media posting.Ms Leclere was standing in Rethel, in the Ardennes region of eastern France, but it was a court in the overseas territory of Cayenne, French Guiana, which found her guilty.
The court heard how Ms Leclere published a picture of a baby monkey, with the caption ‘At 18 months’.
Next to it was a picture of justice minister Christiane Taubira, 62, above the word: ‘Now’.
During a TV documentary, Ms Leclere defended her post, insisting Ms Taubira was ‘a savage’, who was ruining France with her Socialist policies.
Ms Leclere said of Ms Taubira, who was born in French Guiana: ‘Honestly, she’s a wild animal, coming on TV with that devil’s smile. I’d prefer to see her swinging from a tree than in government.’
Ms Leclere, who was reported to the police by an anti-racism group in French Guiana, added: ‘I have friends who are black.’
Following the court judgement, she insisted ‘I did not make racist remarks even though my comments on television were clumsy.
The photo was posted on my Facebook page and I took it off a few days later. I was not the creator of this photograph. I have received several messages of support,’ she added.
A National Front spokesman said the sentence was ‘revolting’ and ‘excessive’, and would appeal.
He said: ‘This must be the one of the harshest sentences handed out in long time for freedom of speech.'
The National Front is currently riding high in opinion polls in France, having won 25 per cent of the popular vote in European elections in May with its anti-immigration, anti-EU agenda.
Its leader Marine Le Pen has been trying to soften its xenophobic image by broadening the party’s appeal, and Ms Leclere was one of a number of women candidates selected to do this.
Ms Taubira has suffered racist insults in France in the past, including having people wave bananas at her.

Missouri man sold disabled teenager into sex slavery

    STEPHEN ARDREY
    tephen Ardrey
A Missouri man was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in prison for taking a developmentally delayed teenage girl from Massachusetts to a motel in Rhode Island, where he sold her to a man for $40 and two packs of cigarettes to use for sex.
Thirty-year-old Stephen Ardrey, of Springfield, Missouri, previously pleaded guilty to trafficking a minor and transporting a minor to engage in sex. He was sentenced in federal court in Rhode Island and apologized to the girl and her family.
Prosecutors say Ardrey met the 17-year-old girl online and corresponded with her for months before taking her in September from a library in Medfield, Massachusetts, to a motel in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. He engaged in sexual activity with her and sold her to another man, they say. She was found in neighboring Coventry after someone saw her walking with Ardrey.
The girl's mother told the court her daughter suffers from nightmares and panic attacks and could not attend the sentencing because of her anxiety. She said her daughter is in therapy and recently graduated from high school.
"We have great hope that she will overcome what has happened to her," she said.
The girl's father addressed Ardrey, telling him he hopes he will use his time in prison wisely to reflect on the "long-lasting harm" he caused and learn how to become a productive, law-abiding citizen.
The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of alleged sex crimes.
The man who allegedly bought the girl for sex was not prosecuted. Prosecutor Adi Goldstein said that person did not know the victim was a minor and agreed to testify against Ardrey.
In offering an apology, Ardrey said no words could undo his actions.
As part of his sentencing, Ardrey also was ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release after he leaves custody, participate in treatment programme and register as a sex offender.
U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell Jr. said the sentence sends a message that sex trafficking is taken seriously and punished severely.
Goldstein requested the 14-year sentence because, she said, Ardrey preyed on an impressionable young woman and is a repeat offender. Ardrey was convicted of pimping in Georgia in 2007, according to the judge.
Ardrey's lawyer, Kevin Fitzgerald, asked for the mandatory minimum, 10 years, partly because he said Ardrey witnessed his girlfriend's suicide when he was 16 and suffers from a mental illness.
U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha said afterward on the steps of the court building that the sentence was deserved and he vowed to use all of his resources to prosecute sex traffickers and those who buy sex.
The teen's family later held a ceremony to thank the law enforcement agencies, who they said ensured the safe return of their daughter and ensured justice was served. They also recognized Jim Pugliese, the man who alerted police when he saw the two walking together.

California man jailed for hoarding over 400 snakes in his home

    William Buchman
    William Frederick Buchman

A California man who improperly kept more than 400 snakes in his Santa Ana home pleaded guilty to animal abuse charges last week.
William Frederick Buchman was sentenced to three years formal probation and 100 hours of community service on July 10, according to KTLA. A judge also ordered him to attend a 16-week animal neglect prevention program, and banned Buchman from owning or caring for animals for five years.
He will also pay $17,000 as restitution for veterinary expenses and care for the hundreds of ball pythons that were discovered in his home in January.
Buchman, who is an elementary school teacher, was arrested after a neighbor called authorities to complain about the foul odor coming from the man's house.
Responders arrived to find more than 400 ball pythons stored in the house. Police said approximately 280 of the reptiles were dead or dying, and others had gotten out of their containers.
"Some [were] in boxes, some in crates and some crawling around," Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told KABC following Buchman's arrest. The stench was described as "god-awful."
"House of Horrors: That's the best way to describe it," Sondra Berg, supervisor for the Santa Ana Police Department's Animal Services Division, said after Buchman's arrest.
In a statement obtained by KNBC, Buchman's attorney explained that the hoarding came about due to his client's depression.

"Mr. Buchman suffered a severe depression after the long terminal illness and death of his mother," his attorney, Paul Meyer, said in a statement. "The depression paralyzed him and he tragically neglected the reptiles, which had been a family hobby."

The alleged victim played on the Ridgeland High School softball team, which was coached by Michael Porter. HIs wife was an assistant coach who also taught at Old Towne Middle School.
The case came to light when the student's mother reported her daughter was being contacted by the couple after school hours. The mother believed that it "went well beyond that of a teacher student relationship," Mississippi News Now reports. After obtaining a search warrant, police said they found a large number of texts between the Porters and the student that included sexually explicit language and naked pictures.
The teen allegedly told investigators she had two sexual encounters with the Porters, one at their home and one inside a press box at Ridgefield High School, WAPT TV reports.
The indictment says the suspects engaged in oral sex with the minor, according to WJTV TV.
The girl's mother told investigators she believes the inappropriate behavior may have begun when her daughter was a student at Old Towne Middle School, where Blair Porter was a teacher. Language in the indictment suggests Blair Porter may have arranged the sexual encounters,WDAM TV reports.
Bond was set at $25,000 for Michael Porter and $5,000 for Blair Porter, court officials said. Both were released after posting bail, according to WAPT TV.

A 36-year-old woman who had sex with a 12-year old-boy has been jailed for 10 years.
Joy Leaann McCall, from Ocala, Florida, had sex three times with the young boy who was the same age as her own children.
She was given 10 years in prison for each charge of lewd or lascivious battery on a child between 12 and 15 but told the sentence would run concurrently.
McCall pleaded guilty to the second degree felony charges and was given a 134 day credit for time already spent in jail.
The court heard that the 12-year-old, who has not been named, told police that he received Facebook messages from the woman.
He said the messages 'continued to get more heated' and he later received photos of her posing in underwear.
McCall arranged to meet the boy at a local shopping mall where she picked him up and ended up having sex in the back seat of her car.
The boy claimed he contacted her again five days later.
She collected him and drove him to some woods, where they had sex again.
He claimed they met for a third time on February 16th and had sex in the same wooded area.
McCall, a shop worker, later admitted to police she had sex with the boy.
The affair leaked out after the young boy confided in a friend who told the victim's mother, according to the Ocala Star Banner.
Police were called after the boy's mom read some of the text messages sent by McCall to her son.
'She was able to see through the different text messaging that had occurred between McCall and the juvenile. And determine the dates that the incidents had occurred,' Sergeant Angy Scroble told WCJB back in February.

Obama fist-bumped man in public over comments about gay sex

Dirty minds: Daniel Rugg Webb, left, told the president a dirty joke and Obama laughed before realizing children were around
Dirty minds: Daniel Rugg Webb, left, told the president a dirty joke and Obama laughed before realizing children were around

If cutting line at a famous Austin BBQ joint lost Barack Obama a few approval rating points, the conversation he had with the cashier probably cost him even more.
When Franklin Barbecue cashier Daniel Rugg Webb saw his chance to speak to the president Thursday, he exclaimed: 'Equal rights for gay people!' Obama then asked, 'Are you gay.'
'Only when I'm having sex,' answered the part-time comedian, which made the president laugh before he realized children were around.'Not in front of the kids!' admonished the president, before fist-bumping Webb and parting ways.
Webb told Buzzfeed that he was not so much shamed but thrilled by his presidential encounter.
'It was cool to have a moment where I was making a sitting president laugh — over something that might be considered inappropriate is a bonus,' he said.

The president had just cut the line at Franklin Barbecue, while in town to raise money for the Democratic Party.
Lives at the eatery are infamously long, and have been known to stretch as long as three hours wait.
But Mr Obama did no waiting today, as he showed up at the restaurant, shook a few hands and made his way straight to the register to order more than $300 worth of meat.
'I know this is a long line. I feel real bad, but – I’m gonna cut'  Obama said.Even restaurant owner Aaron Franklin said the move was unheard of.
'That's out thing, no one skips the line...except Obama,' Mr Franklin told the Statesman.
Mr Franklin and his daughter took a picture with the president, who he said 'seems like a nice dude'.
And to the president's credit, he did pay for the order of a local father and daughter who were directly in front of him.
While the restaurant seemed more focused on getting to see the president than they were on the fact that he cut them in line, others on Twitter were not as enthused about the president's line manners.
'No, no, no President Obama, You wait in line for 3 hours at Franklin's BBQ like everyone else!' a user named Kelly wrote.
Mr Obama ordered some $300 dollars worth of barbecue - not including the order he offered to pay for - carrying out 'eight pounds of brisket, ribs, sausage and turkey' to feed the legions on Air Force One.
When he was paying for his order, the president first brought out a sad was of $1 dollar bills, before flashing his black JP Morgan card for the cameras.
The president would leave Texas with out giving in to demands from Texas lawmakers and from around the state to visit the border, where a child migrant crisis is unfolding and instead said his critics should get behind his request for $3.7 billion if they want to solve the problem.

'Are folks more interested in politics or are they more interested in solving the problem,' Obama said he told Perry. 'If they are interested in solving the problem then this can be solved. If the preference is for politics then it won’t be solved.'
Obama visited Texas for the first time since the influx of child migrants from Central America overwhelmed border resources. He had talks with Perry aboard his Marine One helicopter and in a group meeting with local officials that Obama called constructive.
In a brief news conference after the meeting, Obama dismissed criticism from Perry, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, that he should personally visit the border region for a first-hand look.
'This isn’t theater. This is a problem. I’m not interested in photo ops. I’m interested in solving a problem,' he said.
The president, on a three-day trip out of Washington, is spending much time raising money for Democratic congressional candidates, leading to criticism that he should spend some time visiting the border. Obama said he is getting plenty of information from top advisers who are visiting the area.
'There’s nothing that is taking place down there that I am not intimately aware of and briefed on,' he said.
Obama is battling political pressure from supporters and opponents alike to halt a growing humanitarian crisis along the Texas border with Mexico.
